Emil Kirkegaard has an interesting blog post showing the polygenic education scores (MTAGeduPGS) of different U.S. ethnic groups. Whites 0.47, Native Americans -0.37 and U.S. blacks -1.37. If we set the white polygenic score to equal IQ 100 and the black one to equal IQ 85, then:
Genetic IQ = 8.15(MTAG eduPGS) + 96.17
Applying this formula to Native Americans gives a genetic IQ of 93.
But since both U.S. blacks and Native Americans are about 25% white, correcting for this suggests “pure” blacks and Native Americans would be 80 and 91 respectively.
From this we might infer that before modern humans left Africa 70,000 years ago, our average genetic IQ was no higher than 80, but by the time we reached the arctic 40,000 years ago, some races were averaging 91.
But it was only after the neolithic transition that triple digit IQ races began to appear. Indeed a recent study by Davide Piffer and Emil Kirkegaard looked at 2,625 European genomes and found that polygenic scores for education (a proxy for genetic IQ) gradually increased over the last 15,000 years.
Assuming Upper Paleolithic Europeans had IQs like Native Americans (both cold climate hunter-gatherers), this suggests genetic IQ in Europe has been increasing by 0.0006 points per year since near the end of the ice age, culminating in the Industrial Revolution a few hundred years ago.
Piffer and Kirkegaard believe the increase was caused by higher IQ farmers from the Middle East replacing the indigenous hunter-gatherers of Europe but Peter Frost argues they were not necessarily replaced by farmers, but may have evolved into them, writing:
There is thus an inevitable confound between hunter-gatherer ancestry and natural selection due to hunting and gathering. If we look at alleles that seem to indicate native hunter-gatherer ancestry, we are excluding alleles from hunter-gatherers who successfully adapted to farming and who thus acquired a genetic profile that converges, to some extent, on that of Anatolian farmers.

They found a near-perfect correlation between the average IQ of a race and the average education of said race. Nothing inevitable about that. If they correlated the average education polygenic score of each race with the average height of each race, the correlation would be much weaker because that’s not what education PGS predict.

Lewis et al (2011) made the (false) claim that “most of Gould’s criticisms [against Morton] are poorly supported or falsified.” Surely if Gould were alive he would have defended his analysis from the Lewis et al critique, but luckily we have 3 papers that did it for him.
The first is Weisberg (2014). He said that Gould sometimes overstated his case, but that most of his arguments were sound. The issue is that Lewis et al didn’t falsify Gould’s main argument—that of the difference between shot and seed measurements showing Gould’s unconscious bias. His main argument is untouched—that Morton’s seed measurements showed racial bias and that there are no mean skull size differences between skull size in Morton’s skull collection. Weisberg said that the point that Gould most likely cared most about—that there are no discernable differences in skulls between Morton’s 5 races in his collection—was true and was reinforced by his analysis.
But how did Gould know this? Gould said that Morton packed skulls of Africans more loosely while he then packed skulls of Caucasians more tightly. But how did he make this inference? He made the inference due to the differences between shot and seed measurement.
Kaplan, Pigliucci and Banta (2014)—like Weisberg before them—also argued that Gould got some things right and some things wrong but, again, Gould’s main arguments (the ones he cared about most) were untouched. Weisberg and Paul (2016) argue that Gould thought that shot measurement was the right way to ascertain the differences between the skills in Morton’s collection. Mitchell (2018) argued that Gould was wrong, but that his strongest argument was untouched—the measurement issue—which Mitchell deemed “perceptive.”

The rest is just g nonsense. It’s a shame Gould never responded. Did Jensen ever acknowledge that Spearman’s g was refuted a few years after he proposed it? That’s why he redefined g as PC1 right? Jensen’s abandoned Spearman’s factor model and—as we all know—chose to work with principle components (which is why his g is circular since PC1 exists by definition).
Having said all that, none of that addresses the argument I made defending Gould from charges of fraud from “philosopher” while identifying Rushton as the one guilty of that.

I ssuspect that nomadic pastoralist societies like the Mongols (and also the OG Indo-Europeans, Turks, Arab Bedouins, etc.) had a military advantage over sedentary cultivator societies in premodern times.
In the nomadic societies, riding horses or other animals was common and a lot of the men had some familiarity with fighting due to a lot of raiding and fighting between different tribes or clans.
So you had populations where many or most of the males were skilled horseback riders with fighting experience.
Whereas in the hierarchical sedentary farming societies there would typically be a ruling class/caste, a religious caste, some kind of warrior class/caste or professional soldiers (like the knights in medieval Europe), some commercial/merchant type group, and then the large majority of people being farming peasants.
So even though the sedentary societies had much larger populations, the vast majority of their people weren’t full-time soldiers. The farmers often didn’t have military experience and didn’t know how to ride horses or use weapons like bows and arrows. The farmers couldn’t afford to be involved in wars all the time because they had to look after their crops and livestock.
Besides that, the reliance on sedentary farming made these societies vulnerable to attack. Because their farms and homes were in one place and didn’t move, they were stationary targets.
I think this is how Islam spread so much and also how mongol empire became the largest empire of its time(along with other reasons of course )
