I’ve always liked Tyler Perry. I’ve never seen any of his movies but his Madea character looks hilarious so I think I would enjoy them. Perry’s childhood was a living hell; brutally beaten by his father and raped by men AND women (“so disgusting” he would later tell Oprah)
After a childhood of abuse, he entered high school but was kicked out, (though would later return for his GED) and was on track to become America’s worst nightmare: the big bad angry black man. Fortunately he turned on The Oprah Winfrey Show and was just blown away, to see someone who looked like him but had made it to the absolute top of America! He heard her say “if you write things down, it’s cathartic”. At the time he didn’t know what cathartic meant but he used his IQ to infer it was good and he began writing and never stopped. Still, making money as a playwright was no mean feat, and four years after being homeless (except for his car) he got to meet the woman who changed his life.
So what is his IQ?
We begin with the fact that as of 2023, Forbes estimated Perry had a net worth of $1 billion, making him the 4th or 5th richest black man of his generation. Given there are about 4.65 million black men in Generation X, that puts Perry around the one in a million level for this demographic. If there were a perfect correlation between IQ and money among black men, you’d expect Perry’s IQ to be 71 points above the U.S. black mean, but since the correlation is actually only 0.42 (somewhat lower than for white men), we’d expect him to be 71(0.42) above the black mean of 89 (U.S. norms);85 (white norms) giving Perry an expected IQ of 30 + 89 = 119 (U.S. norms).
However Perry is not just rich, he’s also tall. At a height of 196 cm, Perry is at least 3.06 standard deviations taller than the average black man of his generation. If there were a perfect correlation between IQ and height, we’d expect him to be 46 IQ points above the U.S. black mean, but since the correlation is only 0.25, his expected IQ is 46(0.25) + 89 = 101 (U.S. norms).
What happens when we put these two predictors together? Using math that a Promethean once explained to me, since the correlation between money and height is only 0.13, both variables maintain most of their predictive power:
Perry’s expected IQ = 0.37(Perry’s lifetime income ) + 0.22(Perry’s height)
Perry’s expected IQ = 0.37(+4.73 SD above the U.S. black male mean) + 0.22(+3.06 SD above the U.S. black male mean)
Perry’s expected IQ = 1.75 SD above the U.S. black male mean + 0.67 SD above the U.S. black male mean
Perry’s expected IQ = 2.42 SD above the U.S. black male mean
Perry’s expected IQ = 2.42(15) + 89 = 125 (U.S. norms)
So 125 would be my first guess for Perry’s IQ, but given that income is only moderately correlated with IQ and height is weakly correlated with IQ, the standard error around this estimate is quite large so think of it as just an educated guess.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is kind of a very simplified version of how chat GPT and machine learning in general works, but instead of using statistical predictors to guess IQs, chat GPT uses it to predict what humans would say when asked different questions.

I’m interested in the height iq correlation. have you examined this data well? I have a hunch that this is only a happenstance correlation based on the chance fact that IQ in Europe increases from south to north, as does height, Scandinavians being some of the tallest people in the world. I was in Norway, and there was a urinal that was literally too high for me to pee into! And I’m not really short person. I’m about average height.
could it be that this correlation is merely an artifact of the data having been taken in the US and Europe, two places where this holds true? The highest IQ groups, Ashkenazi Jews, and Japanese are in fact, rather short people. Does the correlation between height and IQ hold intragroup? Like among native Japanese? If you consider lower IQ groups such as sub-Saharan Africa, there is a wide variance of height. On average I would guess, blacks are taller, because so many basketball players are black. you have very tall Masai and short pygmies all in the same population.
It’s a pretty well replicated finding.
The causes probably are:
1) Assortative mating. Both height and status (a proxy for IQ) are desired traits so people who have both end up mating causing the genes to be associated
2) Genetic load impairs both height and IQ
3) As we evolved from apes, we got taller
4) The body may serve as a power pack for the brain. In a study where mice were selected for maze solving ability, the selected mice were found not only to have bigger brains but bigger bodies too.

Literally every single nerd I’ve ever seen is shorter than the average person and more weakly built. So I don’t know where you are getting this data from.
If you just compare whites to other races it skews everything because whites are taller because of nutrition, not necessarily because of smartness.

There are other high IQ types besides nerds. To be a nerd, by definition, you have to be weakly built. There are lots of tall chads that are as/more intelligent than short pencil-necked nerds but those nerds are attached to their intelligence because they don’t think they have anything else going for them. It’s actually very common I think.

My height quotient is 88 or 0.8 SD below the mean for Americans. But I am very strong for my size. As a kid I would wrestle my stepfather who was 6’2″

But the tall chads are probably smarter than the short chadlites. I think it’s just going to happen that people who are on the right path, genetically and environmentally, will grow up taller and hence, be smarter.
East Asians and Jews are smart, but amongst Asians it is the taller that are smarter (compare East Asian height to Southeast Asia). For East Asians as well, I’d imagine the bulk of the lower height vs. Whites is shorter legs (neoteny).
Ashkenazis seem shorter and smaller but I don’t think it’s a huge difference between Gentile Whites.
I think people focus on taller people being average or dumb and shorter people being smart because they already expect that, yet test data shows otherwise. (Unlike with blacks, where they might expect them to be lower IQ or even average and the test data reflects the lower IQ)

If you think back to high school and the workplace and so on. Literally every single high IQ person is below average height. The only guy I knew that was above average height and robust was my autistic friend.
Generally high IQ people sacrifice testosterone and social IQ for academic IQ.
The Terman Gifted study found high IQ people are more socially skilled on average. I do think too much testosterone lowers IQ, especially math IQ. It also lowers height.

If you list every single super genius of the last 100 years they are all average or below average in looks. Even Chris Langan could shed a few pounds.
I actually think above-average-looking people tend to be smarter than average, and vice versa. It just isn’t a very strong correlation, so you still end up with a lot of ugly, smart people and attractive, dumb people.
However, autism/Asperger’s is probably associated with being uglier than average, which probably accounts for some of your experience with ugly, high-IQ math types.
I think the nerd look is especially correlated with quant IQ. The short sight, the kind of narrow face bug like and and analytical look. Many many east asians have it. You know what I’m talking about.
