I received one from my wife for Christmas circa 1980 – yes, I’m that old. I would have guessed “guideless” resolution would require smarts no greater than an order of magnitude below the Promethean’s estimate. I solved it (I’m guessing] in a 2-to-4-hour timeframe, although I can’t honestly say that I’d never seen one before; they were in local stores. I always think the Rubik’s cube is like the old SAT. Something every smart American teenager in the 1980s did, but virtually no one solved perfectly. It would be interesting to give it to a random sample of young American adults who had never much practiced it before (hard to find anyone who’s never seen one) and maybe given them several hours locked in a room with no internet. Maybe offer to pay them $10 for each side completed to maximize motivation.
It would be interesting to see the mean number of sides completed and the SD and whether the distribution was normal.

Weird that Durgin is a Giga member when his scores are between 140 and 170 sd15. Perhaps he used the strategy “work on all the problems, abstain for a few months, then go back” on at least one of the tests that can guarantee membership.
Another member has admitted that in his first test (at school) he only scored 2 standard deviations above the mean. I think most of these Mega and Giga members wouldn’t score above 150 sd15 in an official test the first time they took it.

He entered the Mega Society at age 19 with an MT score of 180 (late ’90s norms). He later went on to become a Giga Society member and, ultimately, a neurosurgeon. His name was Paul Johns.
Oh I remember him! He was very skeptical about chronometrics improving IQ and about general knowledge being a good test of intelligence & very unskeptical about linear extrapolation, especially as it pertained to Giga norms.

I have very bad OCD. I have ‘pure’ OCD where I have to keep thinking about something and repeating it a number of times before I can stop thinking about it. Then later in life it took on paranoia type qualities where I noticed something I didnt like and had to keep calming myself down by saying it wasn’t a threat repeatedly.

Cooijmans’ tests are idiosyncratic, to say the least. They’re probably the best high-range tests except possibly Hoeflin’s. I don’t trust the norms at the Giga level, and Cooijmans himself admits that norms in that range are tentative (extreme understatement). There are about a dozen Giga members, and most of them average way below 190 on his other tests, so they got in with a lucky fluke.
I’m not one of them. I’ve taken most of Cooijmans’ tests and gotten scores ranging from about 130 (draw-the-answer spatial test) to 160 (verbal reasoning), with an average of 147. I’d say it’s pretty accurate. Perhaps a slight underestimate because his tests are basically all untimed and thus don’t factor in my extremely high processing speed.
One Giga member told me he has non-congenital aphantasia due to a head punch in a high school boxing match.
I think I would do the Isis test – only 5 questions – if the questions were available and I would pay only after evaluation both my ability to answer at least 1 question (153 IQ lol), knowing only one person scored 2 questions right (179 lol2) – and the quality of the test itself (ie my opinion of it).
But even if it’s only 15$ , I wouldn’t throw while being in the blue …

not to brag but being one of the few non-autists here id say i have a very high social intelligence not only compared to the subpar performers of this blog but a few standard deviations above the norm in society!
for example i have a very high level of cognitive empathy. i can understand intentions etc. from a mile away. thats only one facet though and obviously there are many other categories or examples of social intelligence.
Yes. I think most people don’t notice because I pass for normal, and the main reason is probably my high verbal IQ.
The only aspect of socialization I can’t handle is romantic relationships. That’s always felt like a minefield. One wrong move, and I’ll get jailed, beaten by a husband/boyfriend/lover/pimp, expelled from university, or other such bad consequences. I was about 19 before I even grasped that dating and sex were related. The most nonsensical part of it all is what the mainstream calls ‘consent.’ Not that I am saying consent shouldn’t be required, but the way I’ve been told that I’m supposed to get it is paradoxical: I have to obtain consent to sexual acts before performing them… which means I have to ask for consent… which means I need consent to ask for consent, or it’s sexual harassment, since you can’t just walk up to a girl and ask for sex (I found that out the hard way, with a visit to the principal’s office)… It’s like needing a job for the experience and needing experience for the job, but worse because the very nature of the problem makes it difficult, even dangerous, to discuss. What the fuck do they expect me to do – determine the other person’s mental state via telepathy? I guess that’s what about 99% of people do with about as much effort as they need for color perception.
