This book by Ha Joon Chang is very good. It should be required reading in college reading lists.

Ill have to investigate the studies and methods to get a firm opinion but here are my first impressions:
-This data seems better and less biased (racist lol) than the old data, but i think they go a bit hard on the middle east.
-Ugandands being smarter than Nigerians and Zimbabweans being smarter than Botswanese seems a bit unrealistic, regarding genetic similarities and environmental contradictions to the data. Maybe this has to do with the age of the studies were things were different than today. Maybe this is why Botswanese and namibians score so low.
-Again, obviously northern MENA are smarter than latinos and obviously north africans have higher IQ´s than the 70´s, i think they in the 80´s. Iran does not have an avarage iq of 80.
-Saudi arabia and oman are interesting but questionable.
-yemen might be realistic becuase its very poor.
-Interesting that sahelians, angolans and north east africans score the highest, since those are my biases regarding africa.
-Interesting that north eastern europe lies ahead of western europe becuase thats were my bias stands, though i only think they would be smarter if raised in a good environment, so maybe these studies are a little unrepresentative. Or maybe this is part of what could prove me right.
-East african scores probably have to do with the time the studies were made.
-Cambodia, and Burma must have some flaws, the rest of south east asia seem more realistic than the old data. Vietnamese data is suspect.
-South east europe and urkaine seem unrealistic, but ukraine maybe is realistic. I expect them to be around the low 90´s. And croatia is interesting becuase maybe their socio-economic standing is close to all thats needed to express most of a population genetic potenciall.
-ill look into the haiti stats first becuase those are very novell. They look suspect, especially in relation to the bahamian and trinidadian data.
-Mongolian data is more realistic but still novel relative to environment. The data is suspect.
-I dont have a lot of unique comments about The other north-east asian data.
-Cheznia that high? Theres data from the russian military saying that their iq is 89-91, and the rest of russia 100, so maybe there is bias on the hand of the russian military. The russian military stats also kinda compliments a mongolian iq of 91, so maybe this is evidence of HBD.
-Spanish and Italian score are more realistic but not reflective of their potencial. Regional data would be great.
-Pakistan being 4 points above india would be an case of HBD if real.
-It appears that africans who dont live in rainforests do better.

Here are some stand-outs:
1) Percentage of whites in the U.S. that’d move if blacks moved next door is <5%—compared to nearly 75% in 1940.
2) 84% of U.S. whites support interracial marriage today versus 17% in 1969.
3) 15% of marriages held in the U.S. are interracial versus 6.7% in 1980.
The surveys are not comparing apples with apples. In the 1950s interracial basically meant black people and white people.
Now it means latinos, asians, south asians, muslims yadda yadda. Not only do many of these groups ‘suprisingly’ adopt more liberal attitudes to each other upon coming to america (and hence making up a bigger share of the population), but I notice whites have not had as many ‘issues’ with these groups as much as the permanent problem children of america.

Good point. That’s probably true. But I think white racial attitudes are on the whole still “liberalizing”—towards all races, including blacks.

Apparently there was a study that found no correlation between math test score results and subsequent economic productivity quoted in Ha Joon Changs book.
The chapter on education actually surprised me. I didn’t realise how much of a waste of resources 3rd level education is. There is essentially no other point to a 3rd level education system asides from (a) training a small minority for roles in their career (b) sorting dummies like Melo from intellectual heavyweights and (c) as a kind of leisurely and social activity in itself to be consumed.
I would also add (d) to mind control anyone bright.
But I digress. The other free marketing slogans I knew where duff, but education spending being a waste of money surely got me.
During my econ degree, education was definitely considered a holy grail type of public investment. Even the most hardcore free marketing priests would admit education was worth spending on.
China people are definitely as smart as whites. I think we could all agree on that. Maybe not socially, but certainly quantitatively.
You have to recall the R/K typology. For instance I read in the Economist today that 50% of children born today in Japan will live to 100. Asians live longer than whites….and certainly blacks.
So it makes sense that in tandem, east asians have slow life strategies, one of which is taking academics seriously and/or continuing to select for civil servants long past the need to.
The reason asians dont have many nobel prizes or much achievement in the last 1000 years is for the same reason they can’t write fiction novels – lack of imagination, creativity, arguing against convention, adventurous life experience, heterogeneity of culture and so on.
The argument Sailer makes about how the caribbean got the good natured blacks and how the american south got trailer trash doesn’t make sense. Because
1. Jamaica and similar carribbean nations have sky crime and cannibalism rates like Africa.
2. Australia got white convicts and criminals from the united kingdom and still turned out wealthier than all parts of the afro diaspora.
I think that argument either has significant holes in it, or maybe is more of a ‘soft rule’, meaning a general pattern, but nothing to really tear your shirt off about the facts.
Both Africans and Jamaicans are less criminal than Afro-Americans/Brazilians. African Slave-trades would prioritize to sell their most violent and anti-social people for more than 18 generations. This might help explain why South Africa is more violent than Ghana and Kenya.

Theres nothing technical about Jones argument. But any fair minded person looking at the stats can’t help but notice the last 30 years have been a sad waste of resources and talent.
Think of all the very smart people like me that went into the financial industry instead of something with real productivity. Very sad.

There’s no way that the entire thing is underestimate, but what makes me feel like at least some of it is an underestimate is that the average IQ itself is higher.
What explains it for Hispanics then? Even they have a lower Verbal IQ than performance IQ.

On the WISC-IV hispanics score 4.2 points higher on verbal comprehension index than perceptual reasoning index. That’s probably mostly because English is their second language, but a small part might be because they’re part Mongoloid who may have evolved spatial > verbal in the ice age. But it suggests that at most bilingualism lowers verbal IQ by 4 points.
Pumpkin, it says that there’s a high correlation between parental education level and VIQ and PIQ. Would that be because higher education is correlated to being more adapted with the culture? Does it correlate to speaking mostly English at home?
My bad, there’s a lower chance of a huge PIQ and VIQ difference with higher parental education levels. Why is this?
There’s a lot of conflict about this bilingualism stuff. One book says that Verbal IQ is lowered, but then Hispanic children who have college educated parents don’t have a difference between performance and VIQ? Or, would it be that Verbal IQ is still underestimated, even for the samples which have no difference between performance and VIQ, because, if they were purely monolingual, they’d probably have a higher Verbal IQ right?

Is the vocabulary subtest correlated to Vocabulary size, or is that what the subtest measures?
