The other night I walked into a bar and there was no bartender in site to serve me. Then a slightly overweight blond young woman stood up to go to the ladies room.
“I thought you were the bartender,” I told her, “cause you stood up just as I entered, I thought you were gona get me a drink”
“And I’m blonde too” she added with a laugh.
At the time I thought she meant blonds are sexy and thus more likely to get hired as bartender, so was flattered that I thought she was the bartender.
Then the actual bartender appeared: She was a 300 lb blond woman…
Friday the 13th
So Friday was Friday the 13th so naturally I went out to celebrate. But sadly a lot of men seem to get off on being very abusive to women. I saw a drunk white guy being abusive towards an arctic woman. He had told her she had no choice but to stay at his apartment because no one else wanted her and then took her iphone and through it in the snow.
A bunch of us were watching from the window inside the bar, debating what to do, when finally I said “I’ll go talk to him.”
“No don’t do that” warned a co-worker. “He’s psycho”
“I smiled,” and like Mrs Voorhees from the original Friday the 13th, I replied, “I’m not afraid.”
When I went out there, I asked the arctic woman, “Is he bothering you?”
When she said “yes” I decided to pull the Dr. Huxtable father-figure shtick, even though he was only about five years younger than me (that’s how drunk I was).
“Son, I think you have a problem,” I told him gently, not wanting to anger someone so aggressive. “And you need to talk someone about it. Maybe talk to a friend or councillor of some kind. And if none of them that works, you can always come here,” I said, referring to the bar.

Most interesting thing he says is that people below IQ 80 take tens of hours to learn how to do a job most of his psychology students could learn in 10 minutes. This is consistent with the theory once proposed by a member of Prometheus that complex learning/problem solving speed doubles every 5 or 10 IQ points.
On the other hand, why does research show that total vocabulary is normally distributed? High verbal IQ people don’t have vocabs orders of magnitude greater than low verbal IQ people. Maybe there just aren’t enough common words for such a pattern to emerge?

You should try to make your comments easier to read by getting to the point faster. Think about the reader when you write & express yourself more concisely.
well, it was kind of meant to be a rant. If my comment is too long for some then no that reader will not read. But I am sure some readers follow my and read animekitties long rants. But if we talk commenters who matter to them I guess they matter also. Point is that the reader is something pumpkin worries about because pumpkin has a general audience well animekitty has a specific demographic which is people that do not ignore animekitty because plenty do ignore him and he just has no time for them. I should get to the point but sometimes it is good to rant. sorry if the flow in the comments messes up because I see no problem with length but with the flow as I commented a too long comment on a shorter comment. That breaks how people read the comments not that the comment I made was too long if it was stand alone. then the readability of the comment flow would work out.

Just received a full-tuition scholarship for three years to University of Miami School of Law (despite a crappy undergrad GPA– thank you affirmative action!!!!!)
Still concerned about the whole enterprise of attending law school. The market for lawyers is increasing after bottoming out, particularly in the Miami area. On the other hand, most lawyers graduating from Miami aren’t working in BigLaw– they’re making $60,000 a year at small to medium-sized firms. And I’m gonna have to take out at least $10000 a year in loans even with the scholarship.
I want to work in the real estate development field after graduating . Any thoughts?

In your place, I would 1) multiply by 3 your actual earnings and divided it by the exceeding salary you’ll reasonably expect to get in the following 10 years.
If it’s less than 1, I wouldn’t do it.
If it’s above 1, I would consider qualitative stuff 1) The ration of being a student likability in your actual work 2) the social value of having a Miami JD for you 3) the career choices that would be opened by this move .
Then I don’t know your age, but if your above 30, I would also consider how I feel being treated as an older guy. When you do at 30 what others do at 25, they think your 5 years late. But if you don’t care – Obama did his jd not so young as many successful people – that’s even better. You can have a rare opportunity to make new friends for life. I wouldn’t do part time. It’s better to choose.

I’m not sure if I’m following here. Let’s say I currently make around $60,000. Multiplied by 3 is $180,000. Divided by “exceeding salary”– well I’m not sure, I’m hoping my salary when I graduate is near $80000 but this may be very over-optimistic– is this what you mean by “exceeding”? I’m assuming you mean by “exceeding” a value “times 10” that would be less than my current salary “times 3”. And smaller would be better according to your next statement if I were to divide…which makes no sense.
To make a long story short, I have Miami connections in the legal field and I love the city, and Im willing to work EXTREMELY hard in the next 3 years to make it all work out. We’ll see. Law school is definitely no joke.
I’m in my late 20s so I don’t think I’ll stick out too much. I don’t have any real reason to rush into law school either, though.
Taking your example, your opportunity cost is 180k you are losing (for get about taxes that cancel out). You believe the magic of jd will give you an extra 20k a year whatever you do. That’s 200k in 10 years. So you’re ok on my quant criteria (wich is conservative, risk takers would take 15 years wich is an average for investment full return).
So the second criteria is based on you evaluation’ of social value of a JD : professional and personal and the social cost of doing it (times, effort etc ). If it’s above 1, you go for it.
OK, makes perfect sense. I think the financial part will work out. Social value of the law degree is pretty high for me– allows me to be in a “elite profession” in a city I love (although the culture of Miami may make networking difficult– I’m not fluent in Spanish and I’ve heard Cubans can be insular) and the programs at Miami will be a perfect fit…alnost exactly what I’m looking for.
Good. In 3 years of JD, there must be a language lab, and you can become fluent in spanish, wich I suppose would be good in Miami. I love cuban accent. 1 of the most beautiful accent in spanish.

I’m sure there are classes I can take at Miami to improve my Spanish. Although learning the law will take up plenty of time so maybe I’ll only focus on it when I can. Actually, I gotta bunch of Spanish textbooks and workbooks sitting on my dresser so I might as well start learning now.

miami has the lowest % of college grads of any major metro iirc. so the law degree might go further there.

My Dad says tax law is just as tough as undergrad engineering. Not sure how he would know about tax law given his background is completely in engineering/computers.
Not that I’m considering tax law in particular, but just saying I realize law school is no joke. It’s one of the few verbal fields where the minimum IQ threshold for success (passing the bar) is probably above 100. All my law friends say law school kicked their ass. B-school on the other hand is probably no more difficult than a undergrad business degree from a decent university (I’m guessing).
I’ve been taking amphetamines for about a year now. Almost daily. Studied for the LSAT 300 hours on them. My feelings about them are mixed. They tend to improve my mood slightly (until I crash) and give me greater motivation, energy, and confidence. On the flip side they cause severe muscle cramps, dry mouth/throat (water helps a lot), make me dizzy occasionally, raise my body temperature (very bad in Florida where Im already sweating in early April), and sometimes make me easily annoyed. And of course they fuck up my sleep sometimes. I think I’ll continue using in Law school though.

I don’t think prestige matters that much to me (I used to it did). A lot of people say law school isn’t worth it unless you go T14 where you can get a BigLaw job making $150,000. I have no interest in BigLaw though.
Everyone says I should go to Florida vs. Miami. Florida has cheaper tuition, and the COL of Gainesville is very low compared to Miami. But Florida didn’t offer a full-tuition scholarship (they came close though). But more importantly, I just prefer S Florida to N Florida. Too many rednecks in N FL.
I went to a t14 on a scholarship and high LSAT-score and low college GPA. I also went straight to a firm. You need to go to a firm to learn the CULTURE. Especially godwanan, because he’s black. pumpkin thinks I’m black. I’m not. Although I am low-class, which probably explains it.

law school is easy. getting an A+ in law school may be somewhat difficult and due to chance, but getting middle of the curve or better is mind-numbingly simple.
i was drunk for most of law school, didn’t crack open the book for several classes, and still graduated in the top third. i also didn’t study for the bar and passed it on the first try, and it’s apparently one of the toughest bars in the country.
then again, maybe there’s a such thing as ‘talent’ for the law separate from IQ.
None of my law school friends are geniuses. Most of them went to Tier 2/3 law programs. IQ-wise they’re 105-125. I guess for them law school was more of a challenge/more work than undergrad, especially given they were all humanities and/or business major types where almost no one studies more than 20 hours a week outside of class. I was told by a professor at one Florida law school I visited recently that students typically study 60-80 hours a week.

Gondwany, tax law is a field where you’ve got zillions of accountants. There either your a slave in big4 . Either you have someone selling you his local business. Exactly like a certified accountant.
Then you have the law part . The advisory and litigiation part is done mostly by top250 by big law firms. For tax, they don’t need JD and sometimes recruit LLM with tax.
Tax is not very white shoe. But it is the field where each IQ points above 120 will give you the biggest advantage in terms of efficiency and impact. Brain is king. But it is such a niche I am not sure it’s reasonable to pursue that.
And, tax advisory and’litigation, are far more technical matters than any Sat prep material or artificial JD clinics (friends have shown me stuff from Harvard, Yale, Chicago JD and the tax llm from NYU. People who don’t like puzzles all day shouldn’t do it (it is like trading quant but with words).
There is so many fields in law that you just have to find your niche (property law is a good one, patent law if you want to change is good too if you have stem background ).

I realise now that much like the political media and the pop culture media, the debate is actually a fraud.

So the average guy opening the financial times and bloomberg mag or reading the Economist is treated to a kabuki theatre debate where people say all the options except the obvious policy solution which is to stop plundering the middle and working class.
So I predict 50,000 articles will be written on CB interest rates and free trading and that, and 0 will be written on stopping beating up the middle class and blowing up muslim countries or erecting a supercomputer in every gentile nation to monitor everyone.
