One of the methods of determining the volume of the brain case, and approximately the weight of the brain, is the determination of the cranial capacity. Very few direct measurements of this kind have been taken, because only few Jewish skulls have found their way into anthropological museums, where they could be studied carefully. But from the few studies of this character that have been made, it appears that the Jews are somewhat at a disadvantage. Lombroso’s studies of the Jews in Turin, Italy, which were made in an indirect fashion, showed that the Jews have a smaller cranial capacity than the Catholics of that city.2 Weinberg collected measurements of seventeen Jewish skulls in various museums of Europe, which were made properly, and are not approximations. The average cranial capacity was 1421 c.cm., which is about thirty to forty c.cm. below the average cranial capacity of the population of Europe. Of course the small number of skulls thus measured is not sufficient to draw positive conclusions.
But the average cranial capacity is nowhere near 40 cc (cubic centimeters) above 1421 (1461 cc) in Europe, and certainly wasn’t in 1911. For example based on Beals, Smith, and Dodd’s (1984), collation of 20,000 skull size measures, Lynn (2006) reported the following crania data for Europeans and other peoples:
One reason for the huge discrepancy might be the method used. For example most of Beals, Smith and Dodd’s data Lynn says he used was obtained by mechanical packing with mustard seed. However they note that historically, the main method was filling the cranium with shot, but this method became obsolete because it yielded results that were 6% too high.
Given that Fishberg’s book was written in 1911, he likely is reporting on shot values which thus need to be reduced by 6%. Doing so reduces the Jewish value to 1341 cc which is indeed below the European mean.
But keep in mind that Ashkenazi Jews are descended from a hybrid population that was about 40% Middle Eastern and 60% mostly European (Atzmon et al, 2010). Given 1369 cc for Europeans and 1293 cc for South Asians & North Africans (SANA), the ancestral population likely averaged (0.6)1293 + (0.4)1369 = 1324 cc so there’s been an increase of perhaps 17 cc.
What was the average IQ of the ancestral population? Richard Lynn put Europeans at 99 and SANAs at 84, but he also put sub-Saharan Africans at an absurdly low 67 but noted that living in the Third World depressed their IQs by 13 points. Most SANA don’t quite live in the Third World, so lets say their IQs are depressed by half that, and raise them to 92 (note: no such adjustment is made for brain size because that data mostly comes from before 1940 when even the First World was malnourished).
Expected IQ of ancestral population: 0.6(92) + 0.4(99) = 55.2 + 36.8 = 95
On a scale where British, American & Australian whites average IQ 100 (SD = 15), today’s Ashkenazi Jews average 110. In other words, their IQ seems to have increased by about 1 standard deviation in the last 700 years, probably because of intense natural selection to earn a living in high IQ occupations (Cochran, Hardy & Harpending, 2006).
Assuming a 0.4 correlation between IQ and brain size (Gignac & Bates, 2017), selection for a 1 SD increase in intelligence should cause about (0.4)(1 SD) = 0.4 SD increase in IQ. Given the within sex standard deviation for cranial capacity is about 91 cc, we should expect the brain size of Ashkenazi Jews to have increased by 0.4(91 cc) = 36 cc
So the actual brain size increase has been about half as much as the actual increase but given these are all very rough numbers, we shouldn’t expect perfect agreement.

Ashkenazi Jews have the highest average IQ of any ethnic group for which there are
reliable data. They score 0.75 to 1.0 standard deviations above the general European
average, corresponding to an IQ 112-115. This has been seen in many studies (Backman,
1972; Levinson, 1959; Romanoff, 1976), although a recent review concludes that the
advantage is slightly less, only half a standard deviation Lynn (2004). This fact has social
significance because IQ (as measured by IQ tests) is the best predictor we have of success
in academic subjects and most jobs. Ashkenazi Jews are just as successful as their tested
IQ would predict, and they are hugely overrepresented in occupations and fields with the
highest cognitive demands. During the 20th century, they made up about 3% of the US
population but won 27% of the US Nobel science prizes and 25% of the ACM Turing
awards. They account for more than half of world chess champions.
While the mean IQ difference between Ashkenazim and other northern Europeans may
not seem large, such a small difference maps to a large difference in the proportion of the
population with very high IQs (Crow, 2002). For example if the mean Ashkenazi IQ is
110 and the standard deviation is 15, then the number of northern Europeans with IQs
greater than 140 should be 4 per thousand while 23 per thousand Ashkenazim should
exceed the same threshold, a six fold difference.
This high IQ and corresponding high academic ability have been long known. In 1900 in
London Jews took a disproportionate number of academic prizes and scholarships in spite
of their poverty (Russell and Lewis, 1900). In the 1920s a survey of IQ scores in three
London schools (Hughes, 1928) with mixed Jewish and non-Jewish student bodies
showed that Jewish students had higher IQs than their schoolmates in each of three
school, one prosperous, one poor, and one very poor. The differences between Jews and
non-Jews were all slightly less than one standard deviation. The students at the poorest
Jewish school in London had IQ scores equal to the overall city mean of non-Jewish
children.
The Hughes study is important because it contradicts a widely cited misrepresentation by
Kamin (Kamin, 1974) of a paper by Henry Goddard (Goddard, 1917). Goddard gave IQ
tests to people suspected of being retarded, and he found that the tests identified retarded
Jews as well as retarded people of other groups. Kamin reported, instead, that Jews had
low IQs, and this erroneous report was picked up by many authors including Stephen Jay
Gould, who used it as evidence of the unreliability of the tests (Seligman, 1992).
Ashkenazi Jews have an unusual ability profile as well as higher than average IQ. They
have high verbal and mathematical scores, while their visuospatial abilities are typically
somewhat lower, by about one half a standard deviation, than the European average
(Levinson, 1977; Levinson and Block, 1977). Han Eysenck (Eysenck, 1995) noted “The
correlation between verbal and performance tests is about 0.77 in the general population,
but only 0.31 among Jewish children. Differences of 10-20 points have been found in
samples of Jewish children; there is no other group that shows anything like this size
difference.” The Ashkenazi pattern of success is what one would expect from this ability
distribution-great success in mathematics and literature, more typical results in
representational painting, sculpture, and architecture.
It is noteworthy that non-Ashkenazi Jews do not have high average IQ test scores (Ortar,
1967), nor are they overrepresented in cognitively demanding fields. This is important in
developing any causal explanation of Ashkenazi cognitive abilities: any such theory must
explain high Ashkenazi IQ, the unusual structure of their cognitive abilities, and the lack of
these traits among Sephardic and Oriental Jews (Burg and Belmont, 1990; Patai, 1977.)

One thing about theory of mind is in looking for others’ motivations. I am practically an isolated loser that spends all his time on the internet. Why? because I have nothing better to do. The average I got on them was IQ75.
But on the New Mexico achievement test, I got 155 (1471).

This is a very good post by Sailer. Even the art of whites is completely in a different league to what blacks and native americans created. Its plain to see. And art is a very ‘subjective’ subject but its obvious.

FDR did more for the average person than MLK but he is becoming forgotten. FDR is basically a titan of the 20th century. MLK was a guy that plagiarised his Phd thesis and watched a man rape a woman in front of him.
I remember my autistic friend from high school hated english and couldn’t understand why anyone would write poetry. I didn’t like the poetry either but it never occured to me that the act of poetry was stupid. I just didn’t like the particular poems we were forced to learn.
Some of the literature I had to learn was in hindsight god awful as well. We had to read To Kill a Mockingbird and learn how noble blacks were. Ugh. Barf.

i think that is what marks an intelligent and smart person and what doesnt. if you cant learn from errors youre probably not as intelligent as another person. too bad IQ has nothing to do with testing for this application of intelligence!
