Charles Murray was recently interviewed by Bill Kristol (who made my annual list of the 100 most influential living people of all time). Murray himself might one day make the list for the enormous impact his 1984 book Losing Ground had on public policy.
I could listen to Murray talk for hours. The man exudes gravitas.
Kristol worships Murray, once calling him America’s leading living social scientist. Despite being a lightning rod on college campuses, Murray is whined and dined by the elite.

I think some neolibs/cons like Murray because of their own narcissism. They like being told that they’re vastly cognitively superior to blue collar folks. It lets them feel morally superior with a clearer conscience.

He’s been demoted in power, but his legacy (influence) lives on.
I find Charles Murray to be particularly pleasant to the ear and the mind. He is perhaps one of the most concise and eloquent speakers I have ever encountered while his voice timber and delivery is right up there, he could have had another career as a radio personality. Many cite Sam Harris as perhaps THE pre-eminent public speaker but I find his tendency to overuse colourful language and metaphors tiresome. He often misses the mark and don’t get me started on his ideas. Clarles Murray also appears to be sincere in his science. It’s a shame what they are doing to him which further reinforces my theory on society’s strong drive towards regression the mean(social regression to the mean as opposed to genetic regression to the mean). Anyone willing to challenge the notion of the “superiority” of the mean(as paradoxical as that may sound or more precisely the wisdom of “consensus”) is fiercely opposed. Given this tendency it is a miracle to me how we managed to get this far scientifically and technologically(as for politically, forget about it, we are infants). Mind you this problem seems to plague the social sciences more than anything else and lets be frank here, the social sciences aren’t real science. It is an insult to refer to a lot of what these people do as science(Charles Murray and certain others aside). Though we are starting to see some infiltration of the PC brigade into STEM and that seems quite scary to me.
Sam Harris is okay, but he’s no Charles Murray. I agree there’s very little real science in the social sciences, but I’d rank Arthur Jensen above even most real scientists (though I don’t know enough about real science to judge).
The difference IMO comes down to accuracy(the margin for error is much much lower in STEM) and the fact that for the most part STEM has been free of political bias or ideology. The cold hard facts are all that matters and when priorities are misaligned it usually comes at the cost of human life. Don’t know very much about Arthur Jensen though don’t get me wrong, I’m not painting them all with the same brush stroke. There certainly are plenty of highly commendable social scientists.
