I think I’ve heard about a similar study done before in Brazil. It’s fascinating because it fits the intuition people who reject IQ testing. Basically, it says Indian children can apply basic math skills when buying and selling goods in a market. However, they aren’t able to apply the same skills when the problems are presented in a typical scholastic way (i.e., with paper and pencil).
What’s the explanation for this? Perhaps a big part of IQ testing and academic tests is simply testing familiarity and comfort with academic-related tools (much bigger part than I thought).
