yeah i took the Ravens when i was a kid to get into a special program for very intelligent children in the mid-2000s. i qualified with a very high score. you had to be at least in the 90th percentile of test takers to qualify for the gifted program and then the program above that required a 98th percentile. so yeah i got into the top program.

Why isn’t each subtest given a unique weighting when calculating FSIQ? It’s harder to calculate but it would improve the test’s g-loading, no?
Because Wechsler didn’t define intelligence as g and because with 10+ diverse subtests averaging moderate g loadings each, the composite score is already so g loaded that it’s not worth the trouble.
A small increase in g at the upper end would mean a large relative decrease in error, though. But yea, probably not worth the hassle.

Well Wechsler did not consider his tests to be perfect measures of intelligence, but he’d probably say that solving puzzles efficiently show you have the resourcefulness to cope with novel challenges life throws at you, and certain items on the Comprehension subtest directly measure if you can cope with the World “What should do if while driving, you see the gas tank is almost empty?”. Memory span for digits shows you have good rote recall which is very useful in many real world situations.
But Wechsler also believed that all of his subtests eventually reached a point where they no longer predicted your ability to cope with real life and so his tests were not intended to measure beyond IQ 130.

In order to know what are the elite schools and what are the also rans you need a good network or advisor coming from a working class background. The careers advisers I was exposed to weren’t very competent in my life. For example they would never say whether a university was elite or not. To a standard careers adviser all colleges are marketable. Thats the racket they are a part of. Learning that you either go to the top 10 in law or business or don’t bother didn’t come to me until later in life by which time it was too late.
If I could start over again I would have went college in the UK first of all and then probably a masters in finance from one of the top 3 in the UK – Oxbridge and LSE.
Anyways education is nowhere near as important as work experience. Getting a few good internships is the preserve of the upper class really in 90% of industries.

The BBC did a very good documentary on it a few years ago. Basically to get the top jobs in media, banking, law, fashion and so on you need internships and the main way to get internships is being an insider of the upper class who has connections.
I looked through the Goldman Sachs investment bankers on Linkedin in London. Many of them were privately educated and got finance internships in their families connections. Very hard to compete with that being the son of a working class parents.
The obvious exception is if you are black.

Loaded have you ever asked yourself why you are paying $20k a semester just to become a salesman? Do you even need a degree for that? Thats what I mean when I say youre dumb. If you were smart you would be trying to become an actuary or a banker.
better a banker with an mba. you don’t need a college degree to take the exams (or you didn’t, unlike the CPA exam), but it is usually required by employers. most have degrees in math. actuaries’ salaries are higher than they were, so the fully credentialed will make north of $200k USD after 15 years on the job. better than most engineering jobs i think.
that’s not a bad salary but CFA+MBA make a lot more and the CFA exams are way easier than the actuarial exams. in fact a lot of actuaries are also CFAs. they just like taking tests.
the actuarial exams are so hard that most give up before passing all of them.
but they’re easy for HYPs level quant types…until…they stop being math tests and start being tests of law and regulations.
(like one professor told me. quants make a lot more than actuaries, but you have to be really really good at math…not just really good but really really good.)
so a lot of TOEFL people can pass the math exams no problem but can’t pass the further exams.
If you can be an actuary you can almost certainly be a quant in a bank. Its basically the same thing – statistics.
