Interesting study about a girl with a 54 point gap on the WISC-R’s verbal and performance scale. When tested at 11, her verbal IQ was 96 and her performance IQ was 150! But when re-tested at age 12, her verbal IQ had jumped to 114 and her performance IQ had tumbled to 126, for only a 12 point gap.

Interestingly, despite this massive change in cognitive profile, her full-scale IQ was virtually identical at both times (124 the first time, 122 the second time). This shows the incredible stability of the Wechsler full-scale IQ, even in the face of massive sub-test change. Probably because error in both directions cancels out when you have 10 diverse subtests.
The lesson is, whenever you see someone with a huge verbal-performance gap, it’s probably been exaggerated by error and the true gap is less extreme.
The gaps have been constant in my IQ profile and have increased. I would not say much error exists.
Would the same raw scores at age 11 and 12 correspond to a huge shift in their corresponding scaled scores? I wouldn’t think it would be anything like what we see in this graph.
Good question. Using the old age trick, 12/11, you’d only expect a 9 point decrease for the same raw scores.
Haven’t read the paper but I suspect she got stressed, distracted, tired or something during the coding and object assembly tests the second time around. Looks like an absolute decline in raw scores which isn’t natural. On the other performance subtests her result is much the same both years.
no vocab and no mazes = invalid test.
I didn’t take Mazes either. It was an alternate test, only to be used if a core subtest gets spoiled or if extra clinical info is needed.
How does Mazes work? Is it just like a regular paper-and-pencil maze you get on the back of restaurant menus for little kids?
Correct
…for little kids?
like the entire P section.
sad.

she can listen:
I feel Arithmetic, Matrix Reasoning, Similarities/Comprehension, and Coding could give as good of an approximation of language acquisition “aptitude” as a straight up vocabulary test would. Crystalized subtests are perhaps as much a measure of personality, motivation, and exposure as they are of intelligence in the traditional (fluid) sense. I conflate personality and intelligence, but PP, do you consider crystalized IQ tests (when coupled with fluid tests) merely diagnostic tools that reveal little about “real intelligence”?
A large culture loaded > culture reduced gap might imply a very motivated cultured person, but it might also imply dementia, or long-term memory > working memory or verbal > non-verbal. And of course just because a test is culture reduced in content does not mean it’s culturally unbiased because certain attitudes (persistence, effort, speed) are culturally acquired.
Is crystallized intelligence, controlling for background and personality, simply fluid intelligence + “long-term memory”? Is the ability to commit new facts to long-term memory not extremely similar to short-term memory?
Is crystallized intelligence, controlling for background and personality, simply fluid intelligence + “long-term memory”?
I think so.
Is the ability to commit new facts to long-term memory not extremely similar to short-term memory?
Just because you’re the best and remembering what you heard 30 seconds ago doesn’t mean you’ll be the best at remembering what you heard 30 years ago. You don’t even have the same brain you had 30 years ago.
I definitely don’t have the same brain I had 30 years ago.
“Crystalized [sic] subtests are perhaps as much a measure of personality, motivation, and exposure as they are of intelligence in the traditional (fluid) sense.”
I don’t think so. Pepe, what would the great psychometricians say about this?
They might say he’s overstating his case as crystallized tests are often the most g loaded.
I thought as much. Obviously they would lose their g-loading if given to someone raised by wolves, but tests generally aren’t designed for extreme outliers, much like door frames aren’t designed for people over 7 foot. Most people have been acculturated to some degree
I’m not saying that it all comes down to culture. It largely comes down to intellectual curiosity and discipline, which I suspect are heavily innate and components of intelligence. PP thinks these factors are cognitively irrelevant, even if indirect measures of such are highly correlated with performance on tests that more obviously measure his conception of intelligence, i.e., adaptiveness.
PP even explained away Malcolm Gladwell’s observation that you can almost perfectly predict a country’s math performance by their students’ willingness to finish questionnaires. He said they invested more time because they’re innately smarter and would get more bang for their buck.
That could just mean that inquisitiveness is very g-loaded. I contend that it is.
“It largely comes down to intellectual curiosity and discipline, which I suspect are heavily innate and components of intelligence.”
These would be, respectively, components of Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness in the Big 5 model, both of which have at most a mild correlation with I.Q.
These would be, respectively, components of Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness in the Big 5 model
Correct. They’re personality traits, not abilities. Forms of motivation. That doesn’t make them any less important, but most people distinguish intelligence from motivation (e.g. “he tried hard, but he’s just not that bright”).
Put simply, curiosity is the desire to learn, while intelligence is the ability to learn.
Of course we can’t always separate these things so neatly. If we had no curiosity at all, would our intelligence even develop in the first place?
One could argue that babies lacking social curiosity become autistic, though more research is needed to untangle the causation.
what i recall is vocab and info are the most g-loaded subtests for chirren (in some study populations). people like murray will elide the parenthetical.
my interview with the san jose, CA arthur andersen consulting actuary…
i know from experience that “white american person” actuary can dismiss the SAT-V as “just vocabulary”. another example of the much more common high M not so high V.
the vocab is (or can be) a lot more than just “how many words you know”.
because the test is not, “have you heard this word before?”
the test is, “define this word.”
and the ability to define…
even words everyone knows…
is very complicated and thus very g-loaded.
if you’ve ever looked at the definition of lexeme x in multiple dictionaries you can see how some definitions are much better than others.
the OED definitions are shorter but also better. other dictionaries of english…it’s clear the authors don’t know what the word means.
but some prefer (jelly/syrup) The American Heritage Dictionary. paul theroux was on its usage panel.
this is just american snobism.
the OED definitions are better….
but the OED is not as good as a dictionary could be….just really close.
i got high once and i proved rogan right. one of the 1%….
never again!
the monopoly guy is about to get brained and he says:
i own park place and boardwalk but look over there marvin gardens doesn’t have enough black tenants and it’s all because of the white trash who live on mediterranean avenue.
promote the meme.
it was like i was shot with a diamond…
my dad the lawyer told me at the oyster house: the law is very CONCRETE.
what’s your point mugabe?
the POINT is that the ability to define words is very NOT the same thing as the ability to come up with a bunch of words as a definition…unless low IQ psychometrists fall for it.
again!
this is why VIQ is a lot more than the ability to be a bullshit artist.
like…
a lot!
7th generation of cheese fish farmer = not any american or canadian…
peepee can cure her ne asian addiction with this:
pico iyer comes from some non-dalit family.
as mugabe has always said…(at least in america) south asians are white people.
i was high and doing hot yoga and i thought the world was going to end. you should do it too.
wtf?
no!
inter alia this how i came to believe joe rogan is a satanist.
sad.
joe rogan is a satanist
Why do you call people that? It makes you look so low IQ and so class.
Peeps, how is the iq test you are developing coming along? Also what would your answer be to the super race question I asked in the other post?
A superior race would be more adaptable
Pepe do you support the truckers
So you let him ask the exact same question but banned it from me.
While calculating Obama’s IQ and then also comparing it to Putin you also should mention how Obama did weed when he was in his teens which is when your brain is still developing.
peepee’s chance to get rich. buy exporting russian resources cos. the only risk for long term investors i can think of is they may be expropriated. but i doubt that will happen. and in fact with inflation and a shitty economy these cos’ profits should increase. higher price for what they export + lower labor costs in russia.
there might be capital controls. foreigners might be prohibted from selling their shares. but these controls will ease in time. long term investors have no worries.
i have bought more norilsk nickel and polyus gold. i may buy alrosa after i hear what the sanctions will be.
buy exporting russian resources
e.g. ?
russian companies that export natural resources, aka mining and oil & gas companies.
i don’t know about russian timber companies or fishing companies.
So for example Rosneft. Trading way below its 52 week high, though I prefer companies near their 52 week low:
https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/ROSN.ME/
yuge cue for peepee:
Trading way below its 52 week high, though I prefer companies near their 52 week low.
makes you sound low IQ and low class.
what you’re referencing is called “technicals” which no one pays attention to except retail idiots.
talk accounting metrics and market metrics.
retail: amateur individual investors who treat investing like it was gambling. these make money in some periods but in the end always come a cropper to the serious professional people.
I could probably fill an entire book with my illegal or questionably legal get-rich-quick schemes that I could do but am too moral and timid to actually execute.
one thing is russia isn’t economically powerless. it’s the second largest oil producer. without its natural gas europe can’t function. norilsk nickel is the world’s largest nickel producer. (polyus gold has the world’s largest reserves of gold. alrosa is the world’s largest producer of gem diamonds. i imagine these resources might be banned from export as they aren’t economically important.)
the wallenberg family of sweden got rich by buying up distressed swedish cos during the great depression.
now there literally is blood in the streets. be greedy when others are fearful.
vox day and later trump predicted taiwan will be next. that really would cause a 1929 like stock market crash because inflation fear or reality. but i think invading taiwan is way more difficult because island and the US navy can prevent it.
1. there will be no resistance or insurgency.
2. putin will call for a referendum like he did in crimea. all those ukrainian states voting to join russia will join russia. the rest will have no military and no CIA bullshit.
3. this will happen in in less than a month.
4. everyone will forget about it in 2 months.
belarus is a russian ally. the baltic states are in NATO. the baltic states don’t speak a dialect of russian (like ukrainian). putin isn’t hitler. what i’ve heard is there are people urging him to do this. it’s not just him.
ukraine is 38% larger than iraq, smaller than texas.
Wrong about no.4. The US and its allies won’t forget and this whole episode has given NATO a new breath of life. I foresee the US goading its allies to spend more on millitary as a % of GDP and they will do it. The CIA might spend less time beating up muslims and spend more time in europe chasing russki spies.
yeah. compare operating margin over the years rosneft vs XOM. they’re not in exactly the same business but then neither are severstal and X.
X = US steel for the in-cognescenti.
but when a company just claims it has these yuge margins you should distrust them unless they have a long history of paying out yuge dividends or stock buybacks.
rosneft doesn’t have that.
SOME russian resource/extraction cos DO!
like merck KGaA is a world leader in what it does and it’s been around for 354 years…

was it public during the nazi era?
were its foreign shareholders wiped out?

it is possible to make money from technicals consistently but…
you have to be some version of the platonic form that is rentech.
that is, you have to have some automated trading….but then you just become a market maker…effectively…
so rentech reached its maximum size a while back.
much smaller than berkshire.
but simons claimed he used fundamental data too.
rentech = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_Technologies
another example of how the very highest IQ people can get rich without doing anything useful.
but maybe it’s cos like rentech which have brought commissions to $0.00.
compare bridgewater with rentech with berkshire…
the people behind the funds are playing different games.
Rentech is supposed to have the best sharpe of the 3 of them and its main fund is closed to outside investors.

and as i’ve said before the operating margin is interesting (as chomsky would say)…
for example:
1. the brazilian steel co SID has fantastic operating margins (long time), BUT…
2. it also has yuge debt.
conclusion: NOT an accident. this is the whole source of schwarzmann’s fortune and the whole LBO industry.
as the late great german gentile (once #1 forbes 400) klugman said…

shut up mugabe. you sound drunk!
they were called the “trawniki” for the town where they were trained.
they were recruited from POW camps.

because the actual killing was gross.
I didn’t think Putin would do it but I think Putin is now willing to create an economic bubble with China and a few other ‘rogue’ states. Russia has a very low debt:GDP and is basically self sufficient so it can take the sanctions.
“Fourthly, the number among the negroes of those whom we should call half-witted men, is very large. Every book alluding to negro servants in America is full of instances. I was myself much impressed by this fact during my travels in Africa. The mistakes the negroes made in their own matters, were so childish, stupid, and simpleton-like, as frequently to make me ashamed of my own species. I do not think it any exaggeration to say, that their c is as low as our e I think this is roughly saying that their rarity equivalent of a borderline-retarded white is well into our retarded range – Ganzir which would be a difference of two grades, as before. I have no information as to actual idiocy among the negroes—I mean, of course, of that class of idiocy which is not due to disease.”
Francis Galton, Hereditary Genius (1869)
cutting off swift? sounds like an escalation to me.
like what would have happened if the uk and france hadn’t declared war on germany after it took half of poland? maybe no war. maybe.
the point is the sanctions can’t be too great without provoking the russians into even more aggression.
the strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must.
The fine print of the sanctions was still being ironed out over the weekend, officials said, as they work to limit the impact of the restrictions on other economies and European purchases of Russian energy.
among innumerable FACTS which explain why the russians aren’t the only bad guys.
in munich, zelensky said he wanted nukes. so he wanted to be in NATO and have nukes.

He’s no longer allowed to call you names either.
the bbc translated one of putin’s words as “benderite”. or that’s what i heard.
i’ve also heard the expression “bandera trucks”.
“bender-ite” might be a euphemism for “sodomite” as “bender” is a british word for male homosexual.
but “bendera trucks” is not a synonym for “franken trucks” afaict. these are heavily armored suicide trucks used by ISIL.
what is this word?

according to blessed pat buchanan the second world war was avoidable. germany recovers all the territory it had in 1914 + some bordering irridenti. russia is at peace with germany. yet shitain and frogland declare war. it’s like dudes! have you heard of the somme?
“peace in our time” chamberlain was the hero.
mugabe was wrong about this thing just like he was wrong about covid.
because he overestimates the IQs of other people, people with much more status than he will ever have.

it’s a change in the world order since 1945 and since 1991.

i was at my nearest whole foods today because it’s close to the dog park and when every other magazine is online it has Harvard Business Review because aspirational media consumption i guess.
what’s on the cover?

who is creating this polarization Harvard Business Review?

could it be, i don’t know…PEOPLE LIKE YOU!?
here’s another cover i found accidentally.

when you ship weapons to ukraine and put on absurd sanctions it means ukraine is NATO.
you’re just proving vlad’s point.
IDIOTS!
how do you not see this?
when you believe that your fellow man is not a demon, and that he is not destined for eternal damnation…
you NEVER treat him badly because he is bad per se…
ONLY to avoid harm he may do to you or ukraine.
this is what ukraine has taught me even though i’ve never taken it or any drug except vodka and (once!) ganja.
Pumpkinperson, do you think IQ tests are a valid measurement of someone’s intelligence like fully?
Not one IQ test. A composite score of several very different IQ tests is though.
What would your ideal battery look like?
I’m thinking this war could last weeks or months now. I don’t think Russia has the resources to pursue a war that long.
you really think russia could lose a war with ukraine?
the oligarchs have lost so much money, maybe they’ll overthrow putin. they have no use for him anymore. putin is not an ideologue and russia never went through a gleichschaltung.
No they wont lose but the war could be like what afghanistan was to the soviet union.
so nornickel (down 40% today) and polyus (up 30% today) are totally awesome cos by various measures.
the question is:
1. will you be expropriated?…will they be nationalized?
2. will they go bankrupt? and thus nationalized by default?
the moscow exchange has yet to open and foreign shareholders have been banned from selling.
how do i say it…these are REAL world leading companies…NOT fake…
Pumpkin what do you think of Cattell–Horn–Carroll theory
polyus and nornickel have lots of debt so bankruptcy may be a fear. but i think the russian government can prevent this without diluting shareholders.
article today quoted nornickel rep saying shipments had yet to be affected. polyus will hold shareholder q&a in a few days.
if these cos’ non-current debt is in bonds then the bond holders will take over upon bankruptcy.
if it’s banks then there’s nothing you can do.
pretty sure polyus and nornickel’s bonds have fallen by nearly as much as their stocks.
the wide face is pretty/better looking. man or woman. FACT!
but the jack ma face is not.
Allegedly about 30-40% of Tucker’s audience are registered democrats according to a study I saw.
Some conservatives register as Democrats to screw with their primaries
the more obvious explanation for the seemingly slow progress of the russian invasion is that it is not an invasion in the usual sense, the russians are doing the minimal amount of violence necessary to get what they want which is not making ukraine part of russia.
Maybe Putin should annex Belarus as well and call himself the new russian emperor. We haven’t had an emperor in the world in a long time. President Xi in China should get in on this too.
there’s still the mikado and the pontifex maximus.vicar of christ, servant of the servants of God, bishop of rome,…
Sailer has a great article on how algorithmic pricing and price obfuscation is making capitalists richer. My general impression is that prices of goods have actually declined in my lifetime relative to incomes but that certain ‘core’ things like housing, education and healthcare have risen dramatically and I’m not sure thats all down to Baumol’s cost disease or even immigration.
Sailer also said his major was economics. Thats crazy, he rarely ever comments on economics.
https://www.takimag.com/article/the-nineties-moments-of-clarity/
I have a theory that the reason the 90s was more distinctive culturally is because it was the last decade before the middle class got hammered economically by the neoliberals.
[redacted by pp, 2022-03-02].
But anyways, back to the 90s, its strange seeing all the political leaders of the time were massive neoliberals in the West and yet the era is remembered for being a prosperous time. It just goes to show economic policies (and bad ones) take time to have their effect and they certainly did in the 2000s e.g. financial crash. I mean a fucking craven neoliberal like Greenspan was in charge of the Fed and we had people like Robert Rubin, Goldman Sachs as head of Treasury.
In order for culture the be distinctive and progress again we need more redistribution to the middle class from the rich but we all know that won’t happen.
Note the way investment banking is an upper middle class job and that the true elite aren’t bankers but people that own capital.
redacted by pp, 2022-03-02 just as with school…if you’re smart you know the system is bullshit led by psychopaths and autistic morons and thus your status suffers just like your grades for two reasons: 1. status means nothing to those who see the system for what it is. 2. those who see it as it is will be discriminated against.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
If all the smartest primates thought like Mug of Pee, the human mind would never have evolved. One million years ago, when only the biggest brained Homo Erectus were surviving, Mug of Pee would have said:
“What are you guys doing hunting those elephants? Don’t you realize you’re only hungry because you evolved to eat because your genes need you alive long enough to pass them down. You’re a useful idiot for your genes, you autist, and you’re driving the mega fauna to extinction you psychopath. If you were smart enough to see the system for what it is, you’d starve to death like me”
[redacted by pp, 2022-03-04] I’m not saying Mugabe is totally innocent either. Many people would say he is underachieving for the level of intellect he has but leaving that issue to the side, your analogy is terrible. Having to eat is a requirement but having to perform – and I emphasise the word perform – in a corporate setting isn’t a prerequisite to survival. I myself am perfectly capable of meeting all my needs and desires living on disability like I have been doing the past few months. Some people don’t need fancy cars and big houses to enjoy life puppy. You just don’t get that many smart people remain middle class or even poor because they don’t need much in terms of material wealth.
Yes, I’m aware. In fact, I personally am one of those people who can be happy with very little wealth & status, since I’m motivated by intrinsic needs like answering scientific questions. However I’m the exception, not the rule. Nature has likely selected most of us to acquire as much status and resources as possible, because such greed provides for ourselves, our children, and our tribe (all of whom share copies of our genes). Just because we now have a social safety net that prevents us from physically starving does not prevent us from psychologically starving for what were once essentials. Of course some people have no desire for wealth or status, either because they’re autistic (don’t understand they’re being looked down on), schizophrenic (motivation impairment) or super high IQ (have more intellectual interests to pursue)
actually performing is more like eating than you think. just like hunting was a form of performance so is the performance of acquiring and excelling at corporate work.
so this made only a tiny bit of sense to say something like that but overall could be refuted.
“Just because we now have a social safety net that prevents us from physically starving”

surely there must be some russian companies which have no risk of bankruptcy because no debt and will suffer less than exporting cos if exports shrink.
they will suffer along with the russian economy in general.
but there’s a fire sale in russian stocks and the only way current prices make sense is if it’s a second bolshevik revolution and shareholders and bondholders will both be wiped out and russia’s sexiest cos will be nationalized.
