Below is a list of people who have commented on this blog. Each person will represent a life form that started 3.5 billion years ago. All started with a complexity score of 1 which is the lowest level of complexity.
Now once a day the computer will randomly pick a number from -1 to +1 for each of you, that will be added to your scores. Since evolution would never select for zero complexity, any score that falls below 1 just remains at 1 by default. If your score hits 100, you’ve evolved into a complex multi-cellular oganism.
Every day the average score of all survivors will be recorded to see how the mean increases over time. The purpose of this exercise is to test Stephen Jay Gould’s claim that random variation leads to increasing complexity when you start near zero and have nowhere to go but up.
Obviously mean complexity will increase at first, but for how long can it continue? We shall see.

A population of 20 people with a chance of a positive and negative score will eliminate 10 people right off the bat.

a.i can detect hard to detect illnesses. For example Google’s a.i if it can identify a cat as a cat rather than as a guacamole, can one day detect hard to detect tumors. A.I can change the world for the better. As long as they keep the IP of their algorithms and related processors, hidden. Thankfully they are doing it.
If you are drunk next to a cliff, and walking randomly (like a drunk man), probability of +1 is the same a -1, your chances of falling into the cliff is … 100%.
And let’s say you are biased to go forward and avoid the cliff (2/3) over going backward (1/3), your chances of falling are still 50%. But after the first step, if your alive (66%) , you have only 1/6th chances of falling.
So if you imagine that the changing environnement is like a cliff (because if you don’t adapt well you disappear), then a random non progressive system (prob of +1 = -1 ) would entail extinction.
You need a probability slightly under 50% of going backward to have a chance to escape !

gould should have used your cliff metaphor instead of his wall metaphor because you can bounce back from a wall but you can’t bounce back from falling off a cliff or going extinct.
gould thinks the only reason the average life on earth got so complex is because anything that evolved in the direction of zero complexity went extinct & so by that logic, the average drunk should keep stumbling further and further away from the cliff because those who don’t fall off.
I would think that life itself has some sort of a threshold effect. You need a certain amount of complexity to keep on thriving- once you are above that basic point, everything is an advantage.

so from the purely mathematical pov what gould meant by “evolution is not progressive” is…sometimes it’s progressive, sometimes it’s regressive, and the greater complexity of the most complex life form over time only requires 50/50 odds.
I wanted to take credit for that idea but it guess its up to you now. Some animals are “more efficiently archaic”.
The complexity is limited to the resources in the planet, solar system, etc, and that means that evolution is not progressive. Complexity is also determined by niche selection, and for each growth spurt of complexity/growth there might be a direction thats limited. Thus follows that extermination events are selection pressures on planets/continents. If “more evolved” species are more likely to survive most extermination events that could mean that theres progressive evolution since most planets would harbour them. Interspecies superiority/inferiority would be meassured by how much they resemble a “platonic ecosystem”.
It seems to work the way Gould describes. If you look at humans, their evolution was certainly progressive, but if you look at a chicken (evolved from a T-Rex), it definitely did not progress in its evolution. Chickens may be smarter, but smarts are not the only factor in fitness.

How the hell do different age groups have different individual subtest correlations to the IQ (more specifically VCI). If IQ is said to stay the same, I’d assume the subtext scores too, so how the fuck are the correlations drastically different?
In the cliff model, the probability of doomed is step backward / sept forward or (1 – p)/ p when you have only those two choices and they are independents.
So if taking a step forward is 0,55, you still have an 80% chance of being doomed.
If its 2/3, you still have a probability of 50%. In these kind of model, I don’t know if it describes reality, survival implies progress.

What is the purpose of intelligence. A much more specific question is how is intelligence used by the human brain. An even more specific question is how does the human brain and its corresponding cognition work.
By this I mean does the idea of intelligence become egocentric where the ability is there to answer ones own problems or something else. Where do we direct our intelligence to and how does it impact what is happening in our mind. This is a Gestalt question because it takes a details to build the bigger picture. I am wondering how that picture arises when people think of themselves as independent of their instincts.
