Sometimes late at night, I turn on a podcast and just lie in bed listening to it until I fall asleep. Perhaps the best podcast I’ve ever encountered is After On, hosted by Dan Reid because the host really takes the time to thoroughly familiarize himself with the research of whoever he’s interviewing.
On episode 8, which I highly recommend any science types listen to, Reid interviewed British astronomer Stephen Webb about the Fermi’s paradox, which is the mystery of why why we haven’t been visited by aliens yet, given that life on other planets is so probable.
Well, my first question has always been why does anyone think life is probable? Yes it emerged on Earth as soon as conditions were right, but it only emerged once. All life on earth, as far as we know, is descended from a single biogenesis so that right there tells me that life is not that probable, because if it were, then why on even this planet, perfectly suited to life, did it not occur at least twice? Maybe the original life had such a head-start that no new biogenesis could compete?
A popular estimate from the Drake equation is that there are 10,000 intelligent species just in our galaxy alone, with many having had far more time to evolve (both genetically and culturally) than we’ve had. So why haven’t they visited us? One theory is that once life gets intelligent enough to build technology, it destroys itself through nuclear war long before it figures out how to travel to distant planets.
Another theory is that intelligent life is out there watching us, but they want to give us a chance to develop on our own, without interference. While it seems plausible that one advanced species might take this ethical attitude, Webb finds it implausible that thousands of intelligent species would all agree.
However Reid mentions near the end of the show, that all the aliens wouldn’t need to agree, because the first (and thus most advanced) of the intelligent species would call the shots and make the rules. I was thinking the same thing during the interview. Many countries in the World don’t agree with the foreign policy of the United States, but all have to live with it because the U.S. (or those who lobby it) call the shots. so intragalactic politics might work the same way. Webb however thinks that the reason no one’s visited us is because we’re alone.
Existence of God?
The strangest part of the interview comes around the 1 hour and 7 minute mark when Webb starts talking about the universe having about a dozen parameters, each of which are precisely set to allow galaxies and stars to form and so the odds of the universe as we know it is only one in ten to the power of 229. Since such slim odds are unlikely to have occurred by chance, Webb argues that there might be a creator (not necessarily God per se, but a more advanced life form) who created or simulated our universe.
I’m no astronomy expert but this argument sounds fallacious. No matter what parameters the universe had, the odds of it having those precise parameters would be be extremely slim, so by Webb’s logic, anything that would have happened would be evidence for a creator. How do we know that something even more impressive than life (as we know it) would not have occurred with a different set of parameters?
An alternative possibility Webb argues is that there are 10 to the power of 500 universes, and by definition, we just found ourselves in that rare one that supports life.
I’ve thought along similar lines as you. Since it took about 400 million years for life to emerge on Earth, but 4000 million years for civilization to emerge after that, could one conclude that civilization is much less likely than life?
Do you mean the Christian God?
I don’t think he does
Intelligence is the biggest bane to society at the end of the day if we have emotions, but a lack of emotions is also a big detriment to society. If no one had emotions, we wouldn’t survive either. I think that’s nature’s way of saying fuck you. Our intelligence is being used to fuel our most primal instincts, which will never change, no matter how much we “evolve”.
”with many having had far more time to evolve (both genetically and culturally) than we’ve had”
It’s possible to evolve intelligence without culture*
It is a very sad thought that we could be alone in this universe but I guess that means we have to set a good example.
Aren’t galaxies moving farther and farther away at increasing speed? Even if there was other hyper intelligent life it would be impossible to visit each other unless we could move faster than the speed of light which would require bending space-time.
GOD = ”an absolute LIFE FORM who invented the universe.”
‘
God doesn’t exist.
FUNDAMENTAL CAUSE there is/was.
1]Universe is so so big and life on earth was possible by many favorable factors and even many them we even don’t know. Not just favorable factors but unique events.
Maybe, in our universal neighborhood if life was possible to evolve it was only in earth.
2] Or there is something blocking the messages of lovely humans…
3- Transmission of signals delay more than scientists usually think.
Aliens have already been here, but yes it’s likely that the big daddy of em all decided not to interfere with individual progress of fledglings. Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way. One sends out a scout ship and it gets shot down by an audacious human; now that human has alien tech, but he ain’t sharing it that’s for sure. Good thing we have Bob Lazar to at least give us a bit of insight into our usage of alien tech.
It’s funny when we think aliens haven’t already contacted us. Gets me every time.
I mean, we could be like ants to them.
No. I hate it when people say that. There are thresholds to being, that a technological or intelligence gap does not render an essential value difference. I think if you’re able to share a conceivable understanding of the universe, you’re on equal plane in terms of moral exchange and obligation.
It makes sense for the America of aliens to mandate a non-intervention policy. But shit happens, and now we have alien tech. And presumably because of us splitting the atom, as is widely assumed by the ufo community, aliens had to see just what the hell we were thinking/doing.
billy, if aliens have contacted us and the government was able to shield that information from the public, it would mean two things:
1. Intelligence is heavily skewed to the left and right tails of the bell curve.
2. We probably received the greatest number of UFOs during the George W. Bush era.
So do you base this only on intuition?
I base this on Richard Dolan, Bob Lazar, and Steven Greer’s 4 hour presentation. There are very few objective-minded people in ufology, and to me these guys can be pretty objective, specifically Bob Lazar. He only explains his experience, having worked in a base near area-51 called S4 (unknown at the time), if I remember correctly, and doesn’t like to speculate beyond that.
And I can only vouch for Steven Greer’s 4 hour presentation on his findings. It was very compelling and didn’t deviate to unaccountable bs – his other stuff, however, sounds like some new age bs. I haven’t bothered with him recently.
Richard Dolan is a journalist, and maybe a bit too smart for this field; he humbles himself at times and entertains some truly dumb stuff, but his highs are better than his lows. He remains a skeptic, but tries his best not to hurt the feelings of retarded fantacists.
I can feel the Crowley post bubbling on the tips of Pumpkin’s fingers. I am an expert in Astro-Theology. let me shed light on this. Travel outside our solar system is impractical because unlike Hollywood would have you believe. We are actually travelling in space, in orbit around the sun as a vehicle, toward the “Big Bang” that created us. “The Big Bang” is equivalent to God, the traveling mass of light expanding the visible universe. It is not conscious, it is a natural phenomena. If you were to travel out of the solar system, and return to your location, you will find the solar system is no longer there. Its not that Aliens would be concerned about getting here. Its about returning to their home world. Alien contact could only occur if a different solar system than ours, were to enter our orbit, Even if only temporarily.
I’ll get to crowley before the end of March like I said
That will be very interesting!
What norming would you use for IQtest.dk? You should take the test. I took it, and getting 20 questions right roughly corresponded to the 50-54 year old norms on that online APM table, is that right though?
Mikey Blazey
There is one key point that you are missing. Everything in the Universe is in motion. Our earth and sun are moving at a speed of 43k mph inside a galaxy that is moving at 1.3 million mph. Now this may seem quite an impossible barrier to overcome or is it? All we would have to do is target a star/system that is moving towards us intead of away from us this way our return journey will be shorter than our trip there. So maybe it’s not as hard as some people think. Of course you are right, we are a long, long way away from developing the technology to even get past the solar system let alone travel to another habitable planet.
Aliens are people too. End the discrimination.
PP,. God is a word used to describe the force that created everything. If an advanced life form created everything, then that advanced life form is God. Or if one ultimate bio-physical-chemical force created everything which I personally believe, then that force is God.
this is an interesting take: https://accelerating.org/articles/transcensionhypothesis.html
another possibility might just be that interplanetary travel is really difficult/expensive, so civilisations usually get stuck in their own planets.
We should be talking about opening the intergalactic borders. Not closing them. Diversity gives us strength. So what if aliens drive down wages and drive up housing and school prices?! Hahaha we will get better fast food and more butlers for our beloved elite.
You would enjoy the movie district 9. About a bunch of aliens earth welcomes as refugees.
That movie was so good. Still waiting on a sequel.
I love refugees from all planets exactly equally.
Aliens will enrich our culture and give us more than just STDs!
Regardless of alien life, technology is our greatest existential threat.
I think that memories are actually maladaptive. If we went into every scenario blind in terms of memory, then we’d have more utility.
Or at least sustain greater utility.
What if religion and aliens aren’t mutually exclusive? There’s a whole TV show called Ancient Aliens.
Just-so stories just like the biblical accounts they attempt to use to buttress their points. There’s tons of criticism of the BS on that show. I still like watching it though.
Pumpkin, how close does IQtest.dk and APM resemble each other? Like, IQtest.dk has a larger ceiling, and has three more questions. Like, do they go up equally in difficulty on both the Iqtest.dk and APM.
“I’m very proud to hear the president use the term ‘fake news,’” Trump said of his Brazilian counterpart while standing by his side at a joint press conference in the White House Rose Garden.
Trump’s comments came as Bolsonaro urged Brazil and the US to “stand side-by-side in their efforts to ensure liberty and respect for traditional family lifestyles with respect to God … and against politically correct attitudes and against fake news”.
2 great men. I knew they would like each other.
A complete retarded, expected coming from a schizophrenic loser as you..
[redacted by pp, March 19, 2019]
Yup. whitey is considerably irrational.
Leftists are not totally wrong about ”racism” against whites or in the intent to eliminate them.
A people who quasi-exterminate themselves two times cannot be treated as minimally sane.
triggered
Clearly Santo’s HGIs (homosexual genetic interests) cloud his thought pattern and make him biased. =^)
Everyone is primarily biased. First of all, i’m just defending myself. All thought pattern must start from biases or point of perspectives. Because i accept all problems related with homossexuality, i’m not definitely biased as you are about southern-italianism.
About ”white is irrational”, yup, and you’re an example. Maybe, white homophobia help me to conclude this but never only this factor.
A history of parasitism, superstitions treated as official agendas and multiple wars prove my point.
Whitey is jewish mental slaves, from extreme right to extreme left.
It’s not just about homossexuals, Bozo is also against environment, social equality… In other words, most brownzilian people will be affected by his retarded white trash.
He/it is in favor to fake-religion, in bronwzil there is a evangelical version of ”christianism”, basically a bunch of fake-shepherds who use lack of rationality of the poor and low-midde class masses to become rich.
Bozo has been in the political life since 28 years old and did nothing, just put their retarded sons in political and increased his patrimony. He is a parasite low-intelligent sociopath.
In terms of TRUE or DEFINITIVE bias, you, RR, is one of the best example. Just because great majority of white nationalists think southern italians are barrely whites on behavior and race, you become definitely triggered and started to attack everything that prove cognitive and behavioral inferiority, on avg, of your beloved ancestors.
Try again…
Existential interests…
I see what you’re saying. I kinda agree
I don’t care about what white nationalists think. I don’t care about people I don’t know.
“prove” haha.
And S. Italians are ‘white’, by definition and were never looked at as non white when they first emigrated to America.
http://italianthro.blogspot.com/2015/02/white-on-arrival.html?m=1
(And I was joking in my previous comment.)
Santo needs to show respect for his president.
People in Brazil just like the West are sick and tired of pandering to gays and minorities. Thats why Bolsinaro was elected.
I always thought if the guy of ItalianAnthro is you..
You entire behaviorism is based on
”environmental differences caused the huge discrepancy between southern and northern italians”… Because you’re very intellectually dishonest you neverever will accept this.
Nah that’s not me. Completely different writing style.
Yep, environ differences are the cause.
“respect for traditional family lifestyles with respect to God”
Wonder what he means by this?
he’s been a total disaster
Everything can be solved mathematically. Everything. Once we conceive it, we can literally find the perfection within it. It just takes a lot of fucking work.
Blablabla, mathematics is beaaaautéé… less merds mathematicians…
I’m torn between being intellectually honest or manipulating people for my benefit. I think that there’s even a mathematical formula for social situations as well, and you can crack it.
PP i once said i saw an source regarding IQ and caste in india. But i might have just hallucinated or something becuase I remember seeing the abstract yet i cant find the study. So lets assume it doesnt exist.
The news paper link which I said I will post was a physical news paper article. It appeared days before I posted that comment. It was/ is not available yet
as people don’t keep days old newspapers. I have to find it. Plus the article is in an Indian language.
If you really want to read it tell me and I will try harder to find it. The reason I didn’t already post it here was because I got lazy about it. Trying to search for a particular newspaper from days past is a pain.
I will post the article in afew days. PP is it possible to scan an article , translate it and post it here.
i think so. just make sure you cite the author and publication.
Why is the FST distance between Switzerland and Russia smaller than the FST distance between Northern germany and Russia ? yet poland and northern germany have an smaller FST distance than Switzerland and Poland? despite goegraphical distance being in the other way? Becuase Grant/Gobineau had some validity! (grant overestimates alpine prescense in europe, nordics are very common in eastern europe.)

I am curious, normal IQ range of those that openly speak out against the Federal Government, and subscribe to the notion it should be abolished? Asking because I just recently started openly speaking out, raising awareness about the Federal Government supplying Heroin to dealers in my city, like the government did with crack in the 80s. It would make targeting supporters of our agenda, to fight back in any way shape or form easier, thank you.
Mugabe still on strike?
he just vanished. it’s very strange.
pill, you’ll find this article interesting:
https://forward.com/fast-forward/421234/christopher-langan-daily-stormer-alt-right-iq/
Yes was interesting. But the author reads him incorrectly. If anything Langans original facebook post mentioned how most alt right talking heads are shysters.
However I haven’t read Langans post talking about “globalists” and “international banksters”. (((Ari Feldman))) seems to think using those phrases is automatically anti semetic. I beg to differ. I would need to read the full post to know what context Langan used them in.
Those two posts by Langan are masterful, and a much needed denunciation of clown world politics. Finally a smart guy that doesn’t scoff at plebeian concerns. No real pretentious airs. Rather, he puts forward his genius to add weight to his argument; to stagger one’s constitution underlying a set of beliefs. The argument itself is damn near irrefutable, and its simplicity makes it compelling. The libs would only be left stumbling over their words, completely unsure of themselves (as the moral implications creep up – their contempt self-condemnatory).
We certainly live in strange times when otherwise sensible arguments or positions are called far-right.
JEEZ,
He is a trash!!!
Alt-reich is a sub-culture where SOME heuristics about obvious things live together with highest levels of megalomania, in other words, stupid self-knowledgeables, and expected consequences.
What a shitty article
“One of Langan’s posts, an obituary for the intelligent gorilla Koko, wherein Langan suggested that the U.S. would do better to admit African gorillas as refugees than African people, was praised by The Daily Stormer, the neo-Nazi blog. The Baffler also reported that Langan’s blogs are also discussed on other neo-Nazi internet forums like Stormfront.”
Read the book Koko’s handlers wrote on her. Seems like Mr 190 IQ doesn’t grasp that. What’s he done with his 190 IQ other than being written about for his 190 IQ and making crackpot theories?
https://slate.com/technology/2018/06/koko-the-ape-obituaries-are-overlooking-her-nipple-fetish-and-other-important-things.html
“Fine … Nipple … Candy hurry … candy … Candy hurry … Nipple…Hurry give-me mouth nipple.” – Koko
According to Patterson and her colleagues, “nice” could be interpreted as meaning “rice.” “Foot” could be interpreted as “man.” “Lip” as “woman.” “Bean” as “cookies.” Or “shoes.” Or “artichokes.” Or a “toy tiger.” Or “Jell-O.” When all else fails, an out-of-context word could be interpreted as an insult. (“Bird,” “nut,” “toilet,” and “devil” were supposedly favorites.) Or interpreted as boredom. Or as bizarre gorilla humor. Even when transcribed by a sympathetic stenographer, Koko’s signing seemed to be littered with non sequiturs, even gibberish. Instead of seeing Koko’s inconsistencies as a sign that the gorilla hadn’t truly acquired language, advocates had to go through more and more intricate—and bizarre—intellectual backflips to try to project a meaning upon them.
How do you know they’re crackpot?
True.
I doubt langan takes koko’s IQ literally
pp when will you give your glowing review of Green Book?
Could the average person be as smart as Plato?
Probably not. But I estimate Plato’s IQ to be 140. And I think the average person can understand him. It’s just that he’s very descriptive in his definitions of certain conditions of something or the inherent qualities of things.
I think that asking if aliens exist is irrelevant, but asking who will represent us when we do encounter aliens.
Im reading this book by Ernest Becker on existentialism. He quotes Kierkegaard a lot. Its actually similar to my own thoughts on the meaning of life. i.e. a belief in a Creator of some sort that put us here for a reason that we need to discover by stopping watching CNN and observing that we’re animals.
But his explanation of mental illnesses is pretty poor. I think people having mental issues not just from perception around reality but something faulty going on in the brain. I suppose he would argue hes right because its generally accepted anyone can ‘go mad’ or become depressed. But I would counter argue by saying the degree one can sensitive to becoming mentally ill and the depth of the illness is neurological. Essentially Kierkegaard says that people are mentally ill because the lack enough candour about their station in life.
Neurosis of some types like addiction can be cured by pinning yourself to a supreme entity and endowing yourself with the kind of sure-ity this gives. But theres a contradiction of sorts here because ones conception of the Creator – which must be a personal journey as he says – is doubtfully going to be ‘objective reality’. I think its great if people can say they understand what God desires and wants, but only if they really do see what God is objectively, as it would be to anyone else with all the facts to bear and adequate sensory and intelligence levels.
My theory with aspergers people being generally atheist is that basically being autistic is blindness to intention. And if you can’t see intention, you probably think reality is a complete random occurence and all that matters is that you survie, enjoy yourself and maybe reproduce. As a pantheist I would say there is a reason for Creation and moreover, I believe if everyone was given the ‘absolute truth’ about who this creator was – it would be a the same for everyone. Religion fails because it makes up explanations but it succeeds because it at least acknowledges that existence deserves an answer. I would then look to scientists to find the clues much in the same way a person might re-engineer something by taking existence methodically apart and inferring what the motive was for creating it. I think thats our best shot. But in many ways it doesn’t matter if you get the answer or not in your lifetime, all that matters is that you are open to the idea most of your social programming – i.e. actual mainstream religion, morality, education, parents teachings and so on – is an illusion to stop oneself reminding oneself that he/she is basically a worm in the great fabric of reality.
It’s not YOUR theory:
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/gnxp/2011/09/what-atheism-and-autism-may-have-in-common/#.XJR-PaRE2Ec
Humans evolved to believe in god because it’s safer to wrongly assume intention than to wrongly assume randomness. The former keeps you looking out for threats.
If humans evolved to believe in God, there would be no autists 40000 years into the experiment puppy.
We evolved to have a cognitive bias that assumes intentionality, even in cases where unintentionalality is correct & that led to theism.
If a rock randomly falls on your head, it’s better to assume someone dropped it on you than to assume it fell by accident, because if you’re wrong about the latter, you’ll be caught by surprise if someone really is out to get you.
In fact, you would have expected humans were autistic atheists only at the beginning of human existence, like most animals are vis the God Question.
Animals are too dumb to even ask the God question, let alone answer it.
Autistics have trouble understanding intentionality but schizophrenics have trouble understanding unintentionality. They can’t imagine how anything can just happen organically & thus see conspiracies around every corner (some of which will be true, but most will be false)
Faellicious thought:
If autists [and atheists] supposedly lack of intentionality [or have less of it] and god is about intentionality, god exist…
Super-causality here.
”And if you can’t see intention, you probably think reality is a complete random occurence and all that matters is that you survie, enjoy yourself and maybe reproduce”
I doubt most atheists believe reality is a complete random occurrence… Even if it was the case, even most atheists are wrong in many existential things, it doesn’t mean god exist.
Atheists tend to be more individualistic. For them, life is to be lived, first of all.
Pattern stubborness is a good explanation to robust events which don’t change abruptly.
Women, who are more prone to be religious and tend to be naive as average autistics… don’t lack [dangerous] intentionality*
Well, i’m above average paranoid, i see more intention in behavior than normal people, and i find very hard to believe in god, in the anthropomorphic way.
A direct or honest way to prove the existence of a super-[biological**]-intelligent-entity [life form*] is trying to prove it, just that.
Religion is an expression of emotion, a primitive, intuitive-reactive, archaic intelligence system. Useful in many things, and problematic when used in wrong way [absolutely common way to ”use” emotion], of course.
Animistic religions are very interesting, even, i see them one the most philosophical of all, because they have as a core belief everything is connected, right on.
…when humans lived/ live, mostly, on communities without huge social inequality or parasitism.
Agriculture and civilization was the begining of large parasitic states as a norm of human society.
Monotheistic gods were invented to centralize numerous people and or to made them obey a central authority or power.
All religions are correct about the idea of a fundamental cause to existence, but most of them don’t try to see it without a anthropocentrical lens. And that this fundamental cause is onipresent in everything.
Humans over-sized their own intelligence and have clearly megalomanial views about life and specially themselves [anthropocentrism//liveism].
How can our cognitive faculties be truth-tracking?
Basically the God exists whether animals are aware of it or not. It doesn’t care if theyll ever know (?)
Injecting my own theories of domestication of humans and the autism puzzle. It seems society is trying to blind its functionaries or worker bees into not being able to understand anything outside of society, like a cult. It wants to stop us being an animal. But one of the ways we are least like animals actually is the cognitive ability to abstract that something created us. SO one of the most primitive philosophical ideas does not belong in a cult setting and one of the most modern ideas, secularism gone mad, is a cult.
You are incapable to connect domestication with religion, instead jump to secular ideology… your instincts blind your reasoning to accept this basic reality.
I saw news recently that said bolsinaro posted a video of someone pissing on someone at a carnival and asking what have brazilians come to. Its very sad whats happening in brazil due to social decay and liberal attotudes to sex. i agree with bolsonaro on these social issues.
Actually i just read an article in the economist saying how left wing people in latin america are not socially liberal on gays or abortion etc. It mentioned castro sent gays to labour camps and no major latin american leftist politican has what puppy would calll ‘high iq opinions’.
So i guess mexicos president must a facist for not allowing trannies to run the army now right.
No surprise santo is intellectually dishonest when he says trangenders are me tally disturbed but not gays. iM open aout my mental problems but santo wants to keep believing hes normal.
All santo has said is that SOME homos are better than others for their ability to improve society. And that society is the health of its citizens, since such a society only could be produced by good members, meaning, that these homos can become well integrated in an moral populous, and be used as an stepping strone for the progression of said society. Also that some homos are varied in their moral quality.
This ‘explanation’ is sophistry.
in japan thesupreme court recently ruled that trannies must be sterilised. Wheres santo now? i want santos opinion on his ancestral homeland.
Hihihihi, Interestingly trannies barrely procreate…
I find always interesting these ”extreme-right” eugenists who want to sterilise people as ”down syndrome”, with mental retardation or without willing to procreate. It’s sounde DUMB.
Eugenics is super important, a new step of human understanding and control of itself.. No pill, you and your retarded boyfriends are not the right people to control nations and decide the guidelines of any eugenic program. You’re inferior scumbags, it’s sad but your mirror is lying for you, little suspicious. Megalomania is one of the main trait among psychotic spectrum.
Japan is not my land ;)(;. And, a country that basically copied nazi Germany by no decently rational reason, demolished big part of its culture by western trash and exploit your people with excessive work deserve pity.
I also think if modern Japan was not strongly influenced by westrash influences.. I read somewhere that homossexuality/sexual diversity was not a huge moral dilema there before the we$tern domination.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_Japan
Pill think any culture or people doing stuff against people like me even in Brazil will change my point of views…
I’m not coward as you Pill.
Pill’s a psychopath. You can just tell. It’s interesting, though, when’s he gunna crack?
Just to be clear to everyone Loaded is a self admitted criminal illegal immigrant. I have never broken any laws.
“A popular estimate from the Drake equation is that there are 10,000 intelligent species just in our galaxy alone, with many having had far more time to evolve (both genetically and culturally) than we’ve had. One theory is that once life gets intelligent enough to build technology, it destroys itself through nuclear war long before it figures out how to travel to distant planets.”
My thought: we ARE the species who will have had far more time to evolve than most others. The Stelliferous Era is supposed to continue for trillions of years, and we’ve popped up at, what, a mere 13 billion or so into that? We’re practically the Eldar, the precursors who showed up in a practically infinitesimal slice of what was and is and is to come.
