This week I will blog about the GRE and maybe sex differences in IQ (per commenter Marry) but today, like every Sunday, is open thread day.
In honor of Mother’s Day, I want to mention a BEAUTIFUL interview I heard on CBC radio with indigenous writer Terese Marie Mailhot. You can listen to the whole thing here. The interview opens with Mailhot reading a gut-wrenching scene (from her memoir?) where she’s having breakfast with her white boyfriend.
Mailhot wants to eat both a proper breakfast with eggs and toast and another breakfast with French toast and syrup, but the white boyfriend is having none of it. So she orders only the proper breakfast with toast.
But the toast doesn’t come.
She complains to the waitress and the toast comes cold.
She complains again and now her breakfast is cold.
Her white boyfriend looks at her with disgust.
Mailhot also talks about her childhood. She understands why so many indigenous girls keep going missing because growing up in an indigenous community, there were always random men offering her drives to school. They looked perfectly normal, until you looked in their eyes….
Switching gears, I watched a talk by Yuval Noah Harari.
He makes the point that what makes humans superior is not our intelligence per se, but our ability to cooperate. He notes than one on one, we’re no better than a chimp. Indeed if he was placed on a deserted island with a chimp, he suspects the chimp would win. But if you placed a hundred men against hundred chimp, then men would win because we can cooperate and they can’t.
For those of us who romanticize the idea of the superior individual, this was a hard pill to swallow.
But I think humans are superior to chimps even on the individual level, if given enough time. The chimp might dominate the man for the first few decades, but if both individuals could live for centuries, the man would eventually figure out how to build a cage and put the chimp in it. Perhaps collectivism and culture achieve what one individual life doesn’t have time to do.
The 21st century technology we enjoy today is the cumulative collective result of the 107 billion humans to have ever walked the Earth.
Could a single stone age man living all alone on Earth have eventually achieved 21st century technology all by himself, if he lived 107 billion times as long as the average man? By contrast, a lone chimp living the same amount of time, would never get beyond the stone age.

IQ tests are a crude way of mapping connectivity in the brain. According to one study, I read the reason my logic ability is 130 is because of the connectivity between my left frontal lobe and my right parietal lobe. 180 regions exist in the brain and a full measure of intelligence would measure the connectivity of all 180. I have severy advanced levels of executive control and some deficits in executive control. This means it is unclear what I am capable of other than by setting me to a task. Neurofeedback is one method of mental improvement that they have perfected in higher organizations. I could use that for my mental problems.
I always had a good sense for the possible. The Intellectual need for stimulation. But I have executive functioning and other difficulties so I approach things differently. I am not specialized. I have always had ideas/questions. I connect the dots sometimes. I can be stoic (emotional control). My SAT scores would imply an IQ of 142. But I am not a human calculator so its lower on official tests (113). What is not being measured in how I think. I have enough metacognition to know being a mental calculator does not grant self-introspection or self-awareness. This affects how you think deeply. You can have a super high IQ and still be shallow in more ways than one. Deep people made the movies and games above. Intelligence is not shallow and that is the problem. Intelligence is deep and IQ test don’t measure that. How did I get 1471 on the SAT in my IQ is 113. Do I “Think Different”?

I question whether Bruno has high functioning autism. Seems normal to me. But that would be confusing social pragmatic communication disorder with autism. I have experienced this sense once. It to me felt like the universe was empty. And I was the only one in it. Others were isolated from me. I still knew they existed but I had the feeling that the universe was indifferent to me and them. What I went through was disassociation. I had nothing to care about either. But I loved walking in the empty mall at 8 am. It felt like my home. Because I knew this place was full of life. I would think about the Tech Singularity on the group walks. The group home was 3 blocks away from the mall. I’d sit in the bookstore on the weekend. I like malls because they feel like caves. My dreams feel like caves. But the feeling of aloneness being in the universe is contrasted by the feeling that the universe is not empty and indifferent and that someday it will be that way always. I have things that I love and the feelings of that never left me. They will never leave me and knew I would have them again when the aloneness past. I knew this even as I shut down and stopped doing things. Even in my brokenness, deep down I still had hope.

AFAIK colonialism WAS profitable, but not for the nations as such, but private interests like the people behind the dutch VOC or East India Company or elements of the monarchy in Spain/Portgual/Belgium.
The standing armies and navies needed prob cost more than these private interest extracted in slaves, minerals and so on. Although in the spanish case, I think they probably made a lot more than the expedition costs. Especially with the plantations.
Its hard to say really. But they wouldn’t have kept doing it if they couldn’t service the debt to Rothschild to pay for these standing armies so must have been profitable at least at the start, even to the public purse.

I have learned several things recently.
Intelligence tests are seeing how good a human calculator you are.
The mind coordinates itself to do internal and external manipulation.
Some people can solve a Rubix cube just in their head eyes closed by a visual process.
Einstein solved much of his math problems by seeing them with his eyes closed.
He did this with shapes and colors internally.
I do not see anything eyes closed. I am extremely week in mental calculations.
But the brain can coordinate itself in other ways by how it’s wired up.
The only thing I experience in my head is energy sensation.
I feel my memories I don’t have any 5 sense experience of them.
I feel in my head the memory of my 10 birthday cake.
I do not know what kind it is but I have some form of super memory.
And I have some kind of pattern recognition problems solving ability.
I don’t know what it is but I will just have an idea that makes sense.
I have a hard time with myself because I have so little volition internally.
I have recently been able to control the feelings of my mental states.
Because I am not a human calculation I think my internal perception is the source of my intelligence allowing me to understand thing most would not.
Perception is not the same as calculation but it allows me to understand.
I am not sure my understanding is creativity as normally seen.
I don’t make anything other than ideas.
And internally I wish I had mental volition.
