I’m introducing you to this map of language families to show you how complex it is to classify human populations. Of course, language is not really genetic in the sense that we don’t need a specific genotype to speak a specific language. Nevertheless, many language families are closely related to mtDNA and Y chromosome haplogroups and reflect prehistoric migrations.
As you can see from the complexity of language families and population genetics as a whole, there is no such thing as humans branching off a main route. Instead, we should picture a gas, spreading across planet earth, with particles randomly moving back and forth then blending with other currents. As a result, no population can be defined by genetic markers or traits that are both exclusive and universally shared by its members and geographical proximity is the strongest correlate of genetic similarity between two populations. Any cluster, cline or “race” is chosen arbitrary, without a threshold of genetic dissimilarity that justifies separation.
Although language is not purely genetic, this very human ability shows an actual instance of Human BioDiversity that no HBDer ever touched to my knowledge: the genetically-driven inclination to tonal or non-tonal languages. From Wikipedia:
A new allele (version) of ASPM appeared sometime between 14,100 and 500 years ago with a mean estimate of 5,800 years ago. The new allele has a frequency of about 50% in populations of the Middle East and Europe, it is less frequent in East Asia, and has low frequencies among Sub-Saharan African populations.[10] It is also found with an unusually high percentage among the people of Papua New Guinea, with a 59.4% occurrence.[11]
The mean estimated age of the ASPM allele of 5,800 years ago, roughly correlates with the development of written language, spread of agriculture and development of cities.[12] Currently, two alleles of this gene exist: the older (pre-5,800 years ago) and the newer (post-5,800 years ago). About 10% of humans have two copies of the new ASPM allele, while about 50% have two copies of the old allele. The other 40% of humans have one copy of each. Of those with an instance of the new allele, 50% of them are an identical copy.[13] The allele affects genotype over a large (62 kbp) region, a so called selective sweep which signals a rapid spread of a mutation (such as the new ASPM) through the population; this indicates that the mutation is somehow advantageous to the individual.[11][14]
Testing the IQ of those with and without new ASPM allele has shown no difference in average IQ, providing no evidence to support the notion that the gene increases intelligence.[14][15][16] However statistical analysis has shown that the older forms of the gene are found more heavily in populations that speak tonal languages like Chinese or many Sub-Saharan African languages.[17]
So we have this genetic tendency for tonal languages that varies across populations, but once again, it’s not race. We don’t need a specific genotype to learn a tonal or a non-tonal language, it just happens that a high frequency of an allele in a population will lead to keeping or losing tone in a language. Moreover, many language families are multiracial and most races are divided in many language families, some of them being racially overlapping.
Looking back to the loss of tonal language and the emergence of writing and agriculture and then civilization, I had a realization: tonal languages are extremely difficult to write because they have too many homophones, see that famous Chinese story below:

Reading this, you understand why the Chinese scripts are so complex and non-phonetic, you also understand why the Chinese are not too fond of romanizations like the Pinyin script. You also understand why It took so long and such a huge population to develop this script that is still evolving and why the populations under Chinese influence developed phonetic scripts when they spoke non-tonal languages like Korean and Japanese.
The Chinese script has probably handicapped China’s technological development since it is highly inconvenient in printing, similarly to Arabic or South Asian languages. Sub-Saharan Africa is also an area of tonal languages and it’s only ancient indigenous writing system, the Nsibidi, looks like early Chinese scripts. Non-tonal speakers in Africa quickly adopted and modified West-Asian scripts however, Muslim West Africans developed Ajamis from Arabic and Ethiopians created the Ge’ez from ancient South-Arabic scripts.
Due to the difficulties associated with writing tonal languages, it makes sense that losing them was an advantage in developing writing systems, the mothers of all subsequent technological and cultural innovations.
Anyway, back to our world map of language families, the intent of this piece was to show that whatever the variable we consider (language being the closest to mental traits that could impact a population’s intelligence, namely verbal IQ) it is impossible to strictly divide mankind into races in the way we divide dogs and cats in breeds.
Last but not least: I hope this very factual post with clearly announced speculations will sound like a lesson of HBD to some people.

Not to derail this as to whether race does or doesn’t exist, but reading this I feel I have similar Idea but in application it expected to get some more occasional discontinuity with certain populations regarding geographical proximity.
Basically, there did exist early “splits”, but likely just as many, if not more, cases of mixing.
So it wouldn’t be precisely accurate to say races are purebreeds rather than differentiated mixed breeds.
I also agree that with your article’s point on emphasizing trait frequency in a population as opposed to simple associating that with an exclusive trait of a race.
I think we need to be clear on what we mean by “split”. I split with my parents when I left their home, some Greeks split from their homeland when the founded the colony of Marseilles in France, and so on. The splits on evolutionaries refkect the fact that two lineages were reproductively incompatible even when they lived in the same area, which is commonly thought as the threshold of speciation. Subspecies is a weaker term but there is consensus that mankind has no subspecies, let alon races, the level below.
Anyway, what I wanted you guys to notice with this post on genetic influences on tonal languages is that we have an example of a genotype that provokes no individual determinism but that is expressed on the collective level, when one allele has a specific frequency in a population, the group has a tonal or a non-tonal language. You HBDers should speculate that genetic expression on the collective level influences many more cultural norms and behaviors.

On the wais 4 my (g) is 130. I scored 1471 on the SAT.
(g) is not the same as FSIQ. mine is 113.
I retain allot but I am really slow. My working memory is just 95.
Crystallized intelligence is long term memory. (my processing speed in 86)
I am completely dependant of my verbal and perceptual intelligence to understand ideas and concepts because I am slow and have poor working memory. (PIQ 121, VIQ 132) What I do is try to understand the overall big picture as to why something is right or wrong. I have trouble explaining myself because of the number of steps involved. If I was faster I would have probably created A.I. by now but I have problems with all the steps involved. But I do know that I am right in most instances.
I understand abstract things because I think allot and compare it to my crystalized knowledge. I practice thinking not memorizing. So I am good at it. I pay attention to how others behave so I also understand people.
Recently people think I have been taking new medications but the last time they changed was 6 months ago. It wasn’t my medications, I just felt better because I dealt with my emotional problems. I feel bad because I feel stupid. I feel stupid because I am slow and have low working memory. This gives me low self-esteem. Medications don’t fix self-esteem issues.
I was in gifted programs at school because I understood things and the teachers thought I was smart. I did well in the quality of my work. I knew allot and scored high on science and vocabulary and essays. I read all 7 foundation novels by Issac Asimov in high school. That adds up to over 2,100 pages of text. I read all the time and read more than 20 books over 300 pages long in school.
IQ tests miss cumulative knowledge because of low sampling rates. The wais 4 test never asked me if I read Isacc Asimov. If they did my (g) would be much higher. Facebook does much better at sampling and network analysis:

The only thing that i would even consider a legitimate test would be the Ravens matrices test but even that is effected by how much math you have done.
I remember seeing an ad from an MIT research team asking people to send in Ravens like problems with a prize for the best one.

That fact that all of these tests are timed is another example of how clownish they are.
Any IQ test that has a time limit is a test of speed not raw brain power.

I literally get paid to invest other peoples money on hunches that i have.
Till this day i have never ended a financial year with my account in loss. There have been times where i have lost big on daily/weekly/monthly fluctuations but i have always bounced back and ended the year with a profit.
i’m not up there with the tiny minority of guys who are pulling in $20 million+ a year but most of them own their own hedge funds. I don’t want that kind of responsibility.
The highest amount i have ever made in one year was $1.2 million.
The biggest loss i have ever made was $47,348 in one day and that was the flash crash of 2010 which the jews orchestrated to send Obama a message when he was getting a little too uppity about financial regulation.
After they did that we saw exemption after exemption being written into Dodd-Frank.
I have always maintained that Obama is not a bad guy. He was a puppet because he is weak and easily blackmailed.
If i was in Obama’s position i would have used the financial crisis as an excuse to purge the power centers of all remnants of the hook nosed vampires.
But to be fair to Obama he did drag his feet on so many things that other puppets would have jumped on.

I’m a quantitative trader which is a software developer that writes algorithms that buy and sell based on certain conditions.
You have an idea of what you think is going to happen in the markets and then express that in code.
at smaller places you also have to look up trends but at the bigger places you have people who do that for you and you’re left with drawing up the trading strategies.
The non-technical guys have less job security because anyone can do vanilla trading.
They think a lot longer before firing a technical guy because its harder to replace them.
This is not like web development where anyone can be replaced with an indian..
And this is not like standard industry programming where anyone can be replaced with a Chinaman.
programming for trading is about creativity and most non-whites are just not capable of that.

As I don’t what HBD people put into the race concept, it’s difficult to know if it’s operational or not. Do HBD people thing that they are 3 races that doesn’t change ? or that all people were black, then evolves, giving white and asian, and inside those groups, a large variety of population groups, who would be like sub-races group (for example jews, or even north and south european, etc. ) . Perhaps it would be a good thing to have an explanation of the different theories of what race are. And then it would be easier to see if the concept is void or not.
As for the article thesis as i understood , ie some genetic factors, like one that provoke population to abandon tonal languages, occuring both among different races and unevenly among them, race is not a useful concept in HBD, i’ve gone more doubt.
For the exterior factor, even if for a population being tall is due to a gene, the fact that dutch, montenegran and some sudanese tribes are tall, doesn’t cast a doubt on the race concept. It’s just that they share a – sometimes new – point in common. For the uneven factor, i think the point depends a lot on the definition of race, so i can’t tell.

If the SAT & Raven were given to all American 17-year-olds instead of just the college bound elite, its correlation with the Raven would only be about 0.5 (not 0.72) because many high Raven people have mediocre verbal IQ and never cared for high school math and thus would flunk the SAT

One of the only fact i know that is good for IQ validity as a measurement of “g” and the existence of a “g” is the test of academic high achiever who had an average IQ around 150. It would be interesting to find other examples because most people think there is no “g” or even if there were a “g”, IQ don’t measure it.
So i was reading an article about astronaut selection for first Apollo mission. They selected 8 among 500 civil and army test pilots that expressed an interest. It looks as if they didn’t use IQ as a selection tool – i am not sure about this – but ended with a group of people with IQ between 130 and 145 with an average of 136. It looks as didn’t want geniuses but a group of very gifted people who could work together easily. Now that the selection process , the european one and the NASA one, is done among 10K to 15 K people, it would be very interesting to know the data. Perhaps it is documented somewhere, but being no reasearcher in this field, i haven’t access on the database. Maybe it would be worth asking European Space Agency and Nasa : IQ data about selected astronauts and if there is a strategy (like selecting intelligent people but not too much, either because it would be bad per se, or because it would generate communication problem in the team, if some were much above the others.
Being an astronaut is intensely physical. There will always be an ex fighter pilot or the like in the crew. As we all know physicality and IQ are inversely correlated.

No, I’ve cited super high SAT samples from 1) Harvard, 2) Dartmouth, 3) an unknown university, all regressing PRECIPITOUSLY to the mean on 1) abbreviated WAIS-R, 2)full WAIS, and 3)Raven, respectively. If people selected to have an IQ in the mid 140s on the SAT, barely average in the mid 120s on official IQ tests, then it’s totally obvious that the SAT’s not that g loaded in the general U.S. population. It’s like if the average NBA player was “only” 6’2″, it wouldn’t take a stats PhD to realize basketball’s not that height loaded in the general U.S. population.

It is true that the GRE once had logical/analytical sections but there were by far the least g-loaded of the three factors measured – their saturation was much less than either Verbal or Quantitative.
The analytical section today is merely an essay graded by a machine, so unless you mean that computers are already smarter than us you have no idea of what you are talking about…
Your admiration of Wechsler is based on nothing. Binet was the original smart guy because he started everything – Binet was much smarter than Galton. A century after the death of Binet, the S-B 5 is still the best measure of g.
Wechsler just stole some tests invented by others, he did not create anything (being obsessed by intelligence just made him obsessive, not a genius).

I met several people with perfect SAT and i thought – before reading this blog – that the correlation was perfect, i was very astonished not to be able to notice their intelligence. I put this on my personal limitation. A correlation of 0.5 makes much more sense. On the other side, knowing that O’Reilly tested 1590 out of 1600 in a time when the ceiling was extremely high, i really thought he was a genious. Despite Pumpkin evaluation of his IQ, i still admire him very much. I wonder why universities don’t drop the scholastic tests and switch to IQ tests as one factor to be considered among others. US News would then rank universities considering average students IQ instead of SAT, LSAT and GMAT.

That’s possible, but how can you be sure they’re all that bright? There are careers where the average IQ is above 130, but I’ve never heard of one where every single person is above 130, unless they are explicitly selected by an IQ test, and even then, they’re usually only 130+ on the selection test and regress to the mean on a randomly selected test. This is an interesting debate. I thought Rushton closed the door on this one, guess not.

How so?
Well HBD deniers admit there are genetic intelligence differences between species, but deny there are significant differences between individuals and races. But race is just a lower and blurrier taxonomic level than species, so perhaps there are genetic IQ differences between races, but the IQ differences within races are non-genetic.
That would partly explain why Rushton found no correlation at the individual level, while a 0.79 correlation exists at the population level.

I must add one thing, and this is very important.
Going through the study, you’ll find equally correlations between microcephalin genotype and infectious disease and between microcephaly genotype and nutritional deficiencies.

No, of course, it’s stupid. What this study shows and probably intentionally ignores is that malnutrition and disease depress IQ. It has been empirically proven by comparing affected individuals and healthy controls in the same country as well as medication and supplementation. If microcephalin genotypes don’t directly cause IQ differences between individuals, they can’t cause differences between groups because groups are just a sum of individuals.
So the correlation is purely coincidental due to the fact that there is a huge African/Non-African difference in the frequency of microcephalin alleles. As a result, the associations between microcephalin genotypes and disease and malnutrition are similarly high as the inflated association with IQ, which is inflated by the unreliability of Lynn’s data. But with this African/Non-African difference in allele frequency, we can find associations between microcephalin and yam, plantain or sorghum consumption or drums playing, or circumcision or HIV, or skin color, or everything that affects Subsaharan Africa in high proportions.

It might cause low IQ on a group level, and then the low IQ causes disease and malnutrition, which further lowers IQ.

IIRC, an African is 30% of the time closer to a randomly picked European than to another randomly picked African, and of course, he is 100% of the time closer to any other human than to any other non-human. I need to check that statement but I feel like breeds and subspecies are 0% of the time closer to a member of another group than to a member of their own group or maybe 5%, but it never reaches the 30% to 50% that we see between “races”.
RR, I don’t know who is this Neven Sesardic but he is truly comical. Lewontin’s argument applies to group and generational differences in height for instance. Replace the plants by people, and soil by health and nutrition and you have his argument empirically proven. It depends how you measure it, but race is such a low taxonomic level that we should expect racial differences to be subtle, and even at the species level, there are almost certainly many cases where individuals of one species are more related to individuals of another species, especially in cases where one species rapidly evolves into another, and then the latter species remains extant for an unusually long period of time.

So maybe Homo Sapiens, Neanderthal and Denisova are actually subspecies of a larger species. But it seems that genetic distance between those populations was high enough for fertility between their members to be significantly limited (only sapiens women could have non-human kids IIRC) and for decrements in reproductive fitness to still affect modern Eurasian populations.

No Sesardic did not destroy Lewontin’s argument – he just said that Jensen’s ideas were more complex that many people think, not that Lewontin’s original idea was wrong or that it did not apply to W-B IQ differences.

The moral triumphantly drawn from that example is: “You just cannot establish between-group heritability on the basis of within-group heritability!” Indeed, this is correct. The only question is whether Jensen was really unaware of that elementary truth.

However, Ducrest et al (2008: 507) also state that human populations aren’t “expected to consistently exhibit the associations between melanin-based coloration and the physiological and behavioural traits reported in our study”.

You’re reading WAY too much into it. I just like the IQ-income correlation because it’s a Darwinian metaphor that validates IQ tests as measures of adaptive behavior in a way most normal people can relate to, and undermines the critique that IQ tests just measure narrow book smarts with little real world practical relevance. I understand that materialism is low class and that many of the greatest minds don’t care for money, but showing an IQ-income correlation is still a potent symbolic victory for psychometrics.
