I am trying to create a list of the World’s 100 most influential living people, ranked in order of influence from 1 to 100.
Time magazine already has a similar list, but their list is not ranked, and is so absurdly politically correct, incoherent and celebrity focused that I feel they need competition. Forbes publishes a list of the most powerful people in the World, but as Condi Rice once said, power means nothing unless you can turn it into influence. So I am trying to create a list of people who have actually had a real impact; people without whom the World would be a very different place. It could be a good impact or a bad impact.
The list I’m trying to create is inspired by Michael Hart’s list The 100, except his was the most influential people of all time. This list is going to be The Living 100: The 100 most influential LIVING people of all time. But I have to hurry up, because a lot of the people on my list are quite old and could die any day now.
Below is a list of over 160 nominees I am considering, but I need to narrow it down to just 100. Please share your thoughts in the comment section, on who belongs on this list and who doesn’t. You can also suggest nominees I didn’t think of. They can be from any country, work in any field, be famous or obscure, good or evil; the only criteria is that they’ve had a huge influence on history and that they’re still alive.

Very impressive reasoning from Daniel Dennett.
I’d add one tangential view on the evolution of the mind.
I think Daniel offers a mechanical view for why say, aspergers might develop – cultural/habitual memetic brain plasticity reinforced and reproduced.
But going back to older debates here about the linearity of evolution. Not all mammals deveop 10 ft necks like giraffes if the environment doesn’t require it. Similarily, not all humans develop consciousness in the same way – hence the lower empathy of non white races of man, or indeed the lower IQ of certain races.
I like Dennet’s distinction between comprehension and competence as consciousness.
I would gather that it would be possible for people to have different types and forms of consciousness. Much like dolphins respond to soundwaves or dogs can smell cancer in people.
Therefore, Dennet has provided a very useful explanation for why consciousness occurs. And he is right, that its more plausible than Chomsky’s magical apparition theory because it opens the possibility to my eyes of different forms of consciousness emerging and battling it out in a darwinian sense.

A.I. that becomes reflective is now autonomous, it can evaluate and reason.
I said before that I have no imagination, I was being very concrete in what I meant. I am immune to hypnosis. You can’t make me see pictures in my mind. You cannot prime me. This doesn’t mean I am not reflective. My theory of mind is better than most people, You cannot mind control me. I see the bias in people, the dissonance, the obliviousness. CEO, take biggest companies. Anchors, take their salary or cumulative audience. You can do that with whatever matter.
So the question should be reduced to the “someone” part. Then, I have no way of knowing who are the most influential living people except by indentifying people whom the media are talking about tempered by whom I relate to more intensely (+ or -). That can be interesting if you have many lists for somehow (loosely) related people like your readership, so I’ll do that 🙂
