For years HBDers have been citing twin studies to argue that IQ is up to 80% heritable. The logic seemed straightforward enough: Take pairs of identical twins separated at birth (or shortly there after) raise them in different homes, and then give them an IQ test. When this was done in the famous Minnesota Twin study, the correlation was 0.75, suggesting 75% of the variance in IQ is caused by genes. Taking the square root of the correlation suggests an astonishing 0.87 correlation between IQ and genes, and that 87% of the individual differences in American IQs are caused by genes.
Critics argue that the twins were not raised sufficiently apart to warrant such strong conclusions. Some like commenter RR argue that the very idea of inferring causation is absurd because genes and IQ interact. For example good genes cause good environments and bad genes cause bad environments so even if identical twins are perfectly separated into random environments at birth, the fact that they both have the same genes means they’ll both end up in similar environments by age 40, so does it really make sense to credit the genes for their IQ similarity when the genetic effect was mediated by environment?
My answer has always been “yes”, because even if environment were what directly caused someone to have a high or low IQ, it was their genes that made them smart or dumb enough to end up in a good or bad environment in the first place, relative to the one they started in, so genes were the ultimate cause of the IQ.
But then I did a thought experiment: Imagine if in the future they develop really good gene editing technology and the richer your parents, the better the gene editing is. Now imagine if we did studies of identical twins raised apart in this society. We might find heritability drops to only 0% because when your identical twin is raised from birth in a much richer home, his adoptive parents can afford the best gene editing software money can buy, causing his intelligence to be twice yours.
Even if the IQ gaps between identical twins raised apart in such a society were 100% caused by genetic editing, twin studies would show them to be 100% caused by environment because the IQ correlation between identical twins raised apart in that society might be zero.
Even though it’s technically true that their environment caused their IQ differences since environment mediated access to gene editing, it would feel somehow wrong to say genes had no effect on their IQ, when literally 100% of the IQ differences were caused by gene editing.
So what I learned from this thought experiment is that heritability does not partition the variance into genes vs environment, but rather it partitions it into genes you were born with vs environment you were born with. Only in organisms that have very little ability to change their environment (like plants or to some degree people living in strict caste systems like 1940s India) , do twin studies capture the full spirit of heritability.

Well its true I laugh at comp science being a major in autism studies. Comp sci is essentially the only way a lower class person can become a billionaire without becoming a professional gambler or criminal/fraudster.
Alot of coding is boring and tedious. Its less ‘g loaded’ than advanced math or certain branches of science. But i also find math boring. So it makes no difference.

Math and chemical engineering sound pretty boring too.
Computer science as a major is a low degree but not for reasons people think. If you learn a programming language that’s not the same as understanding the theory behind how language in made inside the computer.
Students are not taught the history of how the kernel was developed when assembly was all there was which interfaced hardware with software. Machine code is way harder to make than learning ham and eggs variables (ham = 5 eggs = 3 dinner = ham + eggs) also you need to understand that a OOP (object oriented programming) you need calculus to understand. But math goes way higher than calculus.
then there is the compiler that cleans up and translates the code into machine code.
Not to mention executable code in the operating system that maintains order of how all programs initiate and run.
if you learn HTML and web design you are not a person who knows anything about deeper levels of the system.

you don’t just take the numbers at face value when looking at different time periods.
the way I go about it is the SAT IQ followed the population merger with the SD 15 percentage. So 1360 is about 140 IQ and the number of students as a percentage of the curve is 125 – together you get 130
40/30 is 0.75
you do not divide by 125
130 are the two population percentages averaged together

i cannot remember if this has to do with bayes theorem but in a bivariate you have four areas as 100 in the middle. Population percentage goes away from the middle regression up or down not just down. But the total must always add to 100 in any dimension of curve space (a 3D sphere would be if 0.5 equivalent to an eighth of an eighth or one 64th of the total 100% a surface is the quarter)

I actually was on Marilyn Vos Savants web forum once. Not much happening there when I arrived but I sent an email asking to join and was accepted. It’s possible Chris langan is higher than what is above but I had to be consistent with the square root method I am using.
150 for mis savant makes sense. She said in an interview once that fermat solved his theorem differently than how Andrew wiles solved it but people thought she said wiles was wrong, no he just used a different method than fermat did she said because wiles used a method formulated in the twentieth century geometry not known in fermats time. We never knew fermats solution.
Math is actually hard for me without a calculator. I don’t know how to divide decimals or do square roots by hand.
I guess you need that to do calculus which I never learned in school. Area under the curve and making the curve in the first place. I barely add and subtract. But I am good at geometry.
I read about MIT in middle school from the a.i. books. Math there is taught but I can only think that from the graduates book I found you need to do many calculations or you don’t understand it. Before you had computers only some people could know what to do with any of it. It had no practical applications but to a few.
Running a simulation requires trillions of calculations. But people were limited to plotting millions by hand in rooms filled with people. You send your work to a calculator mill done at work desks.
To understand high level math you still need the intuition to see if what is happening. It’s all abstracted away in School. Like there is this whole theory on symmetry in math and math functions in higher spaces. Does rotating a function creates the same effects as another function. Are they the same function. You don’t know unless you do thousands of proofs or find the right spot to start calculating by gut feeling.
Some people do this for years for decades on one problem. Which is why I find MIT fascinating as an example of what people think about math in the movies. I don’t know what the symbols mean on the chalkboard but they look cool. Math could tell you something about reality but in school the other kids always said they didn’t know what good math was, when were they ever going to use it in real life.
I wanted to use math in some way but I don’t know how. Doing calculations by hand is tedious. Sometimes I have ideas I give up on because I can’t plot them out by hand. It’s too much and I suck at drawing.
Another hidden benefit in the long run with comp sci is being able to think about hacking or bypassing censorship/surveillance or creating programmes to automate certain access/hide info.
