Long ago a person in the comment section told me about an excellent study in which several groups of Dartmouth seniors were administered the WAIS (Culver & King, 1974).
What made the study especially useful is their SAT scores (probably taken when they were around 17) were provided:
I decided to focus on the control groups because their IQs were least likely to be impaired by the substance abuse effects the study investigated. The 1971 Dartmouth control group averaged a combined SAT of 1335 and the 1972 control group averaged a combined SAT of 1360. Averaging these together gives 1348. Since the students were 20 to 25 when they took the WAIS in 1970 to 1972, they probably took the SAT from 1965 to 1969. Based on national norm studies I estimate that if virtually all American 17-year-olds took the SAT in 1960 and 1974, the mean and standard deviation (SD) would have been 784/210 and 770/204 respectively.
Since the WAIS was normed so that a representative sample of U.S. adults in each age group would have a mean IQ and SD of 100 and 15 respectively (see WAIS manual, chapter 2), I equated the national means and SDs of the SAT to 100 and 15 also. By this measure a 1360 on the SAT equated to an IQ of 141 or 143 depending on whether I used the 1960 or 1974 norms. Let’s split the difference and say 142. Meanwhile the full-scale WAIS IQ of the Dartmouth control group students was 129.
Now because they were tested circa 1971 and the WAIS was normed circa 1953.5, their scores are inflated by a 17.5 year Flynn effect. According to the brilliant and influential James Flynn (RIP), the Wechsler Flynn effect was 3 points per decade but according to my own independent research, it was more like 1 point a decade. Flynn (who was always kind enough to respond to emails) told me my research was not accurate because I was using a pre-war Wechsler scale and IQ tests did not become accurate until after WWII. I countered that his own research may be compromised by test order effects. (Davis 1977, Kaufman 2010)
Using Flynn’s estimate, their IQs need to be reduced to 124 but using mine they need to be reduced to 127. Either way, they scored substantially lower on the WAIS than they did on the SAT. This is to be expected because Dartmouth students were largely selected by SAT scores and given the imperfect correlation between standardized tests, people who are selected using one test should regress to the mean on another and assuming a bivariate normal distribution, the slope of the standardized regression is a function of the correlation between the tests.
So given an SAT that was 42 points above the U.S. mean defined as 100, the expected correlation (r) between the WAIS and the SAT is:
r = (number of IQ points above 100 on the WAIS/number of IQ points above 100 on the SAT)
r = (24 or 27/42)
r = 0.57 or 0.64
Let’s split the difference and say 0.61.
Because Herrnstein & Murray (1994) popularized the myth that Ivy League students have IQs in the stratosphere (and Jordan Peterson believed it, even though studies he co-wrote show otherwise) I was surprised to learn that at least one of The Bell Curve’s authors knew the truth, though this was relegated to the footnotes (see page 688):

2) You’re describing the IQ ceiling of groups SELECTED by SAT scores. Any time a group is selected for high scores on any test, they regress to the mean on all others because part of what’s being selected is good luck. But groups SELECTED by criteria independent of the SAT, no reason to expect regression.
3) The correlation is probably 0.61 not 0.77. See update I added at end of article

On the 1995 to 2016 SAT, Dartmouth averaged 1455 which still equates to a 142 IQ which regresses to IQ 126 using the 0.61 correlation.

The SAT did not have a meaningful scale until the 1940s by which point the Termites were too old. And even by the 1950s, only about 5% of 17-year-olds were taking the SAT

here is an interesting anecdote I came across my reading that you might find interesting. There is this fantasy author sprague de camp, that I find sort of intelligent. He’s a noted author, although low key, but also wrote a number of critical essays. I read some really insightful comments about some of Howard’s (Conan author) stories that he wrote. He noted some things that I had not, but then there’s some stories that I know things about that he didn’t.
anyway, for that reason I had him pegged as sort of smart. Turns out, I read another book that he was one of Terman’s termites! So he had actual measured high IQ! And so was another writer, the editor of fantasy and science-fiction magazine! Anthony Boucher.
I would say the SAT is valid, just not for measuring the AVERAGE IQ of Ivy League undergrads, just as the Stanford-Binet is valid, just not for measuring the average IQ of the Termites.
When you measure the AVERAGE IQ of a group, those who overperform & underperform cancel on eanother out, however when the test used to measure the group, selected the group, part of what they inevitably selected was over-performance, so the canceling out can’t occur. In other words Termites and Ivy leaguers by DEFINITION scored high on the Binet & SAT respectively, so these tests are not independent measures of their IQ.

good points. In a way, you could almost say IQ and academic testing are more valid for group level traits than for measuring individual potentiality or deficit. Because individual characteristics cancel each other at the group level. Hence individual level arguments about IQ measurement or not really valid for whole demographic groups.

because the model (the bivariate normal distribution) always fits its extremes less well than its not-extremes. and the wechlser BY ITSELF is evidence of this. pipo who score very high on the wechsler have much more tilted scores than pipo who score avg or low.

If your scores are too tilted you couldn’t score that high on the original WAIS because many of the subtests lack sufficient ceiling to compensate for uneven performance which is a problem in its own right. But yes it’s possible that I’m underestimating the slope of entire regression line by just looking at the high extreme, and that the true slope is 0.7ish instead of 0.6.

The WISC-R administered the same items to kids ranging in age from 6 to almost 17 so one idea I had was to use the manual find out what IQ a near 17 year-old would have if he scored the same as a much younger child with an IQ of 100 and 130 respectively. You might find he’d score 70 and 90 respectively. From there you could use linear extrapolation and find that a young child who scores 150 on near 17 norms, had an IQ of 220. Something analogous to this was done with elderly people on the WAIS-R. If you’re old enough you can score something like 190 on the WAIS-R iirc. I sometimes think really smart people should wait until they’re super old to get tested to maximize the ceiling. Are you listening Chomsky?
Of course what this raises all kinds of scientific questions about what IQs above the one in a billion level mean on a test that was created to fit the normal distribution.

I don’t buy it, and one of the reasons I don’t buy it is if SLODR were that pronounced, we’d expect people who average 2 SD below the mean on all Wechsler subtests to be way more common than people who average 2 SD above the mean on all Wechsler subtests, but in fact the curve is quite symmetrical, at least in the biologically normal population. And it’s not because the sum of scaled scores are forced to fit the bell curve; only the scaled scores themselves are.
Also, if SLODR is salient, how do you explain idiot savants with IQs below 40 who can multiply six digit numbers in seconds or tell you what day of the week you were born on if you tell them your birthday or can play any song on the piano after hearing it once etc.

It’s in the Wechsler manuals to which non-experts are not granted access or in old copies of Wechsler’s books of which I’ve bought the last remaining copies. But I will do an article about it.
For example in the WISC-R manual (table 8, page 26) it states that in a theoretical normal curve, scores of 130+ and below 70 are each only obtained by 2.2% of the U.S. population. In the actual WISC-R norming sample these were obtained by 2.3% and 2.2% respectively showing the distribution is symmetrical.
