I’ve long argued that media preferences, aesthetic judgement and artistic sophistication are correlated with IQ. I don’t think the correlation is especially high since art is subjective, but neither is it trivially low, but somewhere around 0.4, similar to the correlations of IQ with brain size and income.
Movie critics probably have an average IQ of 115 while the average internet movie fan probably has an IQ around 100, thus on rotten tomatoes, the greater the ratio of critical approval to popular approval for a given movie, the more culturally sophisticated it is likely to be.
An interesting example is Sound of Freedom which was liked by 99% of movie fans but only 57% of critics giving it a sophistication quotient of 57/99(100) = 58.
I’m not suggesting fans of this film have an average IQ of 58, but a lot of them are QAnon freaks who literally believe your favorite celebrities and Democrat elites eat babies and worship Satan. The best way to discredit a credible conspiracy theory (Epstein allegedly blackmailing politicians to affect Middle East policy) is to mix it with absurd ones. I’m not saying Sound of Freedom promoted QAnon but QAnon promoted the film which appealed to what one critic called “dads with brain worms”.

If you are not born upper class and don’t expect a massive inheritance basically you need to think about your pension from day 1. Novel prediction doesn’t mean the prediction is new. It means that we predict something that we don’t already know. People have been predicting there’s life on other planets for thousands of years but that’s still a novel prediction because we still don’t know. Novel describes the fulfillment of the prophecy, not the prophecy itself.

To be clear, I don’t think it’s sample size of people that increases spurious correlations, but the ratio of how many genes you’re sampling to how many people are in your sample. For example if we look at 3 genes and there are only 3 people in the sample, then a math formula can easily match each gene to each phenotype and pretend 100% of the variance is explained. But if we have 3 genes and 30 people, it becomes much harder for so few genes to explain all the variance in your sample.
Now the problem is with whole genome sequencing there’s now whispers of 80% of the variance in height being explained, validating twin studies. On the other hand, if there are 3 billion basepairs in our genome and only 1 million people in the study, then it’s possible for a computer to just construct a combination of “genes” to “predict” everyone because it’s not actually predcting, it’s post-dicting after it already knows everyone’s height and genes.
Only when its predictions replicate in a sample not used to construct the model will smart folks be impressed.
That’s why in James Lee’s 2018 study on the education attainment of 1.1 million people, he and his countless co-authors checked their prediction in two independent samples of Americans iirc.

His genetic score was far higher than anyone would have expected, however the genetic score in turn failed to predict how tall he was. However that’s partly to be expected because when you select someone for extreme phenotype, they regress to the mean on genotype, so if you then try to predict that same phenotype, they regress again.
But the main reason his predicted height was unspectacular was that for normal people, the trend line predicting height from genes was almost completely flat and they were extending a trend line calculated from normal people to an outlier and that failed. Why did it fail? As the author hints, probably because of non-additive genetic effects. Among normal people, the mere number of “tall” or “short” “genes” doesn’t predict much because we don’t know how the genes interact. But at the high end, you have almost all the tall genes so we don’t need to know which ones interact. The gene by gene interactions just explode, so until we understand this, the trend line needs to be positively accelerated to correctly predict folks like him. A linear model is too simplistic.

That’s the biggest issue here: If there is so much population stratification for height and such weak effect sizes and rs, how can we even be confident about “mental trait” GWASs?
