I’ve long argued that media preferences, aesthetic judgement and artistic sophistication are correlated with IQ. I don’t think the correlation is especially high since art is subjective, but neither is it trivially low, but somewhere around 0.4, similar to the correlations of IQ with brain size and income.
Movie critics probably have an average IQ of 115 while the average internet movie fan probably has an IQ around 100, thus on rotten tomatoes, the greater the ratio of critical approval to popular approval for a given movie, the more culturally sophisticated it is likely to be.
An interesting example is Sound of Freedom which was liked by 99% of movie fans but only 57% of critics giving it a sophistication quotient of 57/99(100) = 58.
I’m not suggesting fans of this film have an average IQ of 58, but a lot of them are QAnon freaks who literally believe your favorite celebrities and Democrat elites eat babies and worship Satan. The best way to discredit a credible conspiracy theory (Epstein allegedly blackmailing politicians to affect Middle East policy) is to mix it with absurd ones. I’m not saying Sound of Freedom promoted QAnon but QAnon promoted the film which appealed to what one critic called “dads with brain worms”.
How does my own taste in movies score by this metric? Years ago I published a list of my ten favorite movies and here’s how they did: Halloween (1978) 108, Friday the 13th (1980) 110, Carrie (1976) 121, The Sweet Hereafter (1997) 114, American Beauty (1999) 94, Silent Night Deadly Night (1984) 115, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 103, Creepshow (1982) 94, Quest for Fire (1981) 117, and The Breakfast Club (1985) 97. Mean score: 107; Median 109

there is a little catch that some movie attracts only a specialized audience and even more so with time.
I remember noticing that for a Godard or Bergman movie, you have mainly university professors, and persons with very elite tastes, or movie school students … So the ratio will go down for those movies and you have to force the Spiderman people to watch it to get the real score. they would call it human right abuse.
Imagine our poor Philo forced to watch Persona. He would think the movie is a special MK-ultra experiment on him …
for example Gloria wich is one of the easiest John Cassavetes movie because it’s an action movie (a kid is pursued by the mafia and is helped by a mafia lady who was meant to retire) has a 93/79 ratio where as Opening Night, one of the most difficul, has a tiny 96/90 one.
i have a high IQ scoring for your lists : for each movie that is not on rottentomatoes but has a NewYorker or NewYork times critic add 1.5 sigma and for each one that is on rottentomatoes but doesn’t have any critic from neither subtract 0,5 sigma.
those papers don’t want even to mention the most stupid movies so even less dedicating a written critic to it

and another practical easy one : if you speak about movies with someone and they always give you the title of the movie & the name of the movie director, they are probably above 130.
if not, it doesn’t matter because it’s a very culture loaded habit but specific to moderately gifted subgroup within this class. If it’s someone from working class background and not studying arts nor movies, then this person is probably above 140
France I do not know much about but I think their independent films would be the most “sophisticated” and do not go to the big screens because hollywood movies are meant for IQ 100 people to make the most monies.

Looking at the bell curve it does not make sense to me anymore. To me it is just a statistical artifact. The curve does not fit with the level of intelligence people have because I can see how people are in my life and their psychology is not the same as expected by their score. Using my social intelligence for example I can see that really people know more or less than the tests are showing statistically.

I can think of more that particularly stand out for me. But a lot of the ones others mentioned I really loved (It’s a Wonderful Life, Terminator, Matrix, Spirited Away, most of Nolan and Tarantino’s films are obviously good, many of James Cameron’s, some Spaghetti Westerns, Spider-Man 2002 etc.)
Star Wars – not a particular fan and I remember it being underwhelming compared to what I expected and compared to some other classic movies but of course the general world is great. I’m not a huge fan of Star Trek. I also watched Indiana Jones too late presumably to care.
The incel films are all good (Taxi Driver, American Psycho, Blade Runner 2049)
Comedy and Horror are hard to put in any “favorite” list for me. I feel your “favorite” movie should represent something timeless or holistic about reality or life, and life should not be predominantly comical or horrifying. Not a huge fan of ganster films. Like some documentaries but also not really “favorite film” material.
Howl’s Moving Castle is one of Studio Ghibli’s few overrated films, imo. I also found Spirited Away to be underwhelming.
By contrast, When Marnie Was There is grossly underrated.

I put my old post on the Neural properties of the mind post, and it gave me a 156.
I put half my article on APs in it and it said 154, my one on racism, stereotypes and crime and it said 142 and my one on “the great replacement” and it said 135.
Result is highly dependent on content type. Just selecting a philosophical or scientific subject suffices to comically inflate one’s score.
On a typical day, I might receive anything between 100 and 155.
it is still dependent on word usage and syntax which shows intelligence!
What is your actual verbal IQ?
Most language is common language. It would be hard to fake understanding a scientific or philosophical subject. Text analysis has come a long way where just entering big words will not give you a high score. But on any specific subject a person can understand it at a higher deviation out of the populus because of specialization but that does not mean anyone can get high score because even with specialization people cannot reach a verbal IQ above a certain level unless they were coached.
My Philosophic Composition paper got 150 on this analyser but it is not the best philosophical paper in academia but by a person working by themselves with no academic guidance in “the literature”.

What I can definitely opine on is autism and movie choice. I don’t want to name commenters in case this post gets banned but you have one commenter here who literally admitted he asks his wife to tell him when a different character walks on screen because he can’t tell the faces of 2 different people apart. I mean if you can’t imagine things and don’t know the full spectrum of human thoughts and emotions how in the fuck are you going to appreciate a character or the story. Being autistic and watching cinema is like a blind person going to an art gallery. Obviously the choices the autistic commenters made speak for themselves.

You look at puppy’s bashing of ‘prole’ movies. 99% of the movies he chose were prole movies. Even within the horror genre, he chose all the prole ones except for Creepshow which I agree is a classic. I love slasher movies for the same reason I love trashy talk shows from the 1980s. They’re so bad they’re good. You like horror movies that are good in the conventional sense but it takes far more imagination to understand why 80s shlock like Silent Night Deadly Night or Friday the 13th are great films than why The Shining or Poltergeist are. It takes a certain sense of irony, humor and social intelligence to see the difference between a movie that is bad and a movie that is so bad it’s good & some of the best art is created by accident.

Survey reveals highly educated audiences enjoy ‘trash films’

So-called ‘trash films’ do not stand in opposition to taste and education. Quite the contrary, they are often watched by people with an above-average education and interest in culture. In a survey performed at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, film scholar Keyvan Sarkhosh investigated why certain viewers actively seek and enjoy films which they themselves describe as cheap and trash
Typically, trash films are low budget films, which do not correspond to the mainstream standards and taste. However, with three sequels and a big fan community, a film like “Sharknado” is a perfect example for the success of trash films. “Apart from flying sharks, blood and guts are the main ingredients of this surprise trash hit”, says Keyvan Sarkhosh, postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. “At first glance it seems paradoxical that someone should deliberately watch badly made, embarrassing and sometimes even disturbing films, and take pleasure in them.” By means of an online survey among regular consumers of trash films, the authors were able to show how the typical features of trash films support a positive enjoyment.
The study, which has just been published in the journal “Poetics”, is the first major empirical investigation into trash films and their audience. Not only did the authors arrive at supporting established hypotheses and assumptions on ‘bad films’ in film and media theory, but also at providing new and surprising findings on trash fans and their attitude towards these films.
Most of the participants in the study agreed that the term “cheap” best describes trash films. The label trash itself covers films from various genres. Yet almost all participants mentioned low budget horror films as typical examples. The films mentioned most often were “Sharknado”, “Plan 9 from Outer Space” and “The Toxic Avenger”. Yet the typical trash fan does not really take such films seriously. Instead, an ironic viewing stance came to the fore. Although to a large extent the participants stated that the films in question were cheaply made and thus “trash”, they also confirmed that trash films are overwhelmingly perceived as a form of positive entertainment. Given an ironic viewing stance on the audience’s side, trash films are prone to provide “amusement” – they are considered to be entertaining and funny.
Furthermore, the study provided strong evidence that trash film fans are predominantly male – almost 90 percent of the participants indicated that they are men – and highly enthusiastic film buffs. “To such viewers, trash films appear as an interesting and welcome deviation from the mainstream fare”, says Sarkhosh. “We are dealing here with an audience with above-average education, which one could describe as ‘cultural omnivores’. Such viewers are interested in a broad spectrum of art and media across the traditional boundaries of high and popular culture.” Indeed, that an appreciation of trash films is coupled with strong preferences for art cinema is one of the central findings of the study.
Moreover, the “delight in cheapness” is associated with an active exchange over the films watched. A substantial part of participants write about their trash film experiences in forums and blogs. “While many of the typical assumptions related to a cult film experience could not be confirmed with regard to trash films, the authors of the study were able to show that an active engagement in exchanges considerably contributes to the enjoyment of trash films..
