I can only tentatively speak for Madhyamaka Buddhism when I say anything but the idea of something not being real doesn’t mean the same thing as what’s conventionally meant by it. There’s a continuous connection between the conscious events you attribute as the self but there is likewise a continuation between the dissolution of whatever aggregates compose you and the self, although it isn’t experienced there’s a logical connection that one can make between one state and another as an event, there’s no definite point where one stops being the other. The nature of a single particle that composes a human is its own, but its ability to act as if it belongs to a person also shows that its nature isn’t singular since its ability to exist as a part to a greater whole is another facet of its nature.
Aggregates are transient, composed of smaller parts that have a nature distinct from the greater object, they break apart and its components used elsewhere again for some other purpose. The smaller parts have a relationship between itself and the greater wholes, so its nature isn’t wholly its own. In none of these observations does that aggregate not exist, it’s simply empty of any essential or permanent nature, there’s no fine line that can be drawn between itself and every other object it’s related with. It exists because it is empty, constantly in motion, reliant on and subject to cause and effect.
There’s no real denial of a conscious self, all conscious observations are real in a sense and to think otherwise is absurd, but none of it is permanent and attachment to it and whatever it observes inevitably leads to suffering. Buddhism only has soteriological value, it could potentially matter only if a person wants to escape from suffering.
All experience is constant change (transient).
But there’s a connection between them (continuity).
Constituent parts can be added or subtracted but they are not the permanent consciousness of what I am.

I understand what it means to have perceptions and to use them embodied to act and self-reflect on the nature of the self. – We grasp things by being unable to integrate them into the interoception of “self”. The code of how to grow and different rates determines what happens when any entity encounters its environment. The homeostatic nature is derived by the symmetries of the path of these patterns.

The simplest way to put it is that we as organisms have basic instructions for how growth must happen so as to not fall apart.

As far as you assign the self to the mind, the material constituents have no real ability to be known, share no substance with the mind, and only their shadows exist as a projection within the mind. There is no real difference between consciousness and what’s observed by it. There’s an experiential continuity between these things in the same way there’s a continuity between each experienced moment, the only difference is that it’s easier to forget the latter is transient. The central point is that even with the permanence of the platform of a mind the self is still transient (or rather, at the most extreme, has no definite distinction between itself and other things within the mind).

I do agree with Cox that “we don’t know”. And I agree that the things that we directly interface with are physical, however his argument of ruling out the soul only makes sense if you have materialistic priors. On a side note- we don’t have a complete theory of the world so precise understanding of aspects of it don’t have a big picture significance- so while we do understand how particles work, the fundamental ontology of particles, and unifying contradicting theories such as quantum mechanics and general relativity as still left unanswered. Furthermore there could be new stuff that was never observed before that can force us to expand our current state of knowledge about physically real entities, kind of like what happened with the indirect inferences of dark matter and dark energy (not saying that is a soul, but using the discoveries as analogies). It is always good to be humble, going back to the “we don’t know”. But to be honest none of that is relevant to my critique of Cox, I just wanted to lay out a slightly bigger picture even within the physicalist context. Regarding souls- there have been traditions that posit that souls do not exist in bodies, and yet Brian talks about missing context of stuff interacting in bodies. So a position that the soul isn’t in the body avoids this objection. Also a segmenting of the soul into causal and acausal components could also offer an alternative. In addition to that, it doesn’t need to have a strong interaction as Cox posits. If one allows the body and the mind to both be physical, one could still find ways to hypothesize about a non-physical soul. In Samkhya for examples, all instruments of the body and the mind are physical but the source of the consciousness is non-physical. In most cases it is presumed that this non-physical consciousness is mostly an unintelligent observer, with intelligence being a physical quality. Though I should say I do not follow Samkhya since I disagree with too much to be a follower. In a way this example is analogous to the question of whether there is something outside of observable space, like is our space a bubble inside something that is different from itself? Cox’s point of view is that if you can’t measure it, its not there. This is fine as a strictly empirical approach, but to formulate an understanding of the world on any level, you need theory and need to posit some kind of ontology which may go beyond what you can measure. Say if the universe that we live in were a closed spacetime bubble such that any causal thing cannot exit it, then if there were something on the outside the causal thing would never be aware of it. But the lack of the awareness doesn’t make the external not real. This is funnily enough, summarized by Cox himself near the end of the video where he finds the notion of there being more as absurd. To him observable complexity is good enough. Hence I think Cox’s approach is very rational, but not very logical. A logical approach wants more, wants what Cox doesn’t want to think about, and this doesn’t necessarily lend itself to belief in a soul or a god and can lead to a person disagreeing with those notions as well. Heck its a weapon that cuts in all directions and seeks to reach whatever depth it can. That is the difference between rationality vs logic, and why I think logic is better.
Whether or not he is right about the particular topic, I don’t know. Maybe he is right, maybe he is wrong.

I think the statement should be correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation. Because i think sometimes it does.

One way to test this would be to test twins reared apart where one exercises and the other doesn’t.
Or they could simply scan the brains before and after they start physical training and see if there’s growth (compared to a control group)
There are multiple RCTs which show beneficial effects of exercise on brain volume. Eg Kaiser et al (2022) showed that in diseased and elderly people there was a moderate to strong effect and in young people no to a small effect regarding exercise and brain volume. Meaning that the effects are protective and restorative at old age. Just like how consistently elevated BP leads to a decrease in brain volume.
How big is the effect size?
Firth et al in their meta-analysis showed 0.120 for total volume, 0.265 for left hippocampus, 0.164 for right hippocampus, 0.146 for healthy older adults (total volume), 0.355 for healthy older adults (left), 0.237 for healthy older adults (right) (all Hedge’s g).
And I would say that RCTs are the gold standard for showing causation, what do you think about that? There are a decent amount of RCTs which show this effect holds.
I assume they mean 0.12 SD. So assuming an SD of about 100 gram, exercise might grow a brain from 1400 grams to 1412 grams and IQ would increase by less than a point.
But Jordan Perterson agrees exercise is the best way to avoid mental decline with the reason being the brain uses oxygen like crazy.

standardized mean difference is just the mean difference (usually between the treatment group and the control group) divided by the standard deviation. In other words, the difference expressed in SD units.
Standard deviation allows you to compare measures as different as several inches of height, a few dozen pounds of body weight, several years of education, 100 grams of brain weight and 15 points of IQ, since they’re all one standard deviation.
It’s possible the 0.14 refereed to the correlation coefficient but if it was an experiment comparing a control group to a treatment group it was likely the standardized mean difference.

alc poisoning is when your blood alc level is .4 or higher which is a lot of drinks! First time I got it I chugged two Smirnoff bottles like whole bottles and had 2 get my stomach pumped! Second time I had alc poisoning was my birthday in New York where I threw up all over the hotel lobby I was staying at and nypd put me in handcuffs and brought me 2 the hospital!
I was so fortunate no charges were pressed against me because I was hurling abuse at them while I was hurling on the floor!

I agree, alcohol is not good. I know so many alcoholics and it’s just depressing.
Obviously beyond the health effects, some of the worst nights/mornings I ever had involved getting drunk. It also made some of the best, but overall I can’t say it’s worth it. But as a way to socialize in your 20’s/30s, it’s really hard to beat because of the way it’s ingrained in the culture, parties, and how it makes you drop your inhibitions.
Generally, I think if you want to feel some sort of high or whatever, a good way to do that without using anything is just to not get a lot of sleep, exercise, be alone, try something new, etc. Drugs are more like a crutch for when you can’t/won’t do those things for various reasons.
I agree it’s a lot more healthy 2 find things you can do with profound benefits that will tell you 2 stay away from drugs and alcohol!
a lot of younger people are abstaining from such things because they have no use 4 them in their paths 2 success!

It may be true that most individual animals don’t have souls in the sense humans do, but that animals as groups have a soul that governs their purpose and interaction with the universe. They may have souls in a more generic or nonlocal way, in the way “Mother Nature” is said to exist as the personification of the needs and abilities of nature, even if they don’t have intentionality in the specific spatiotemporal manner that we do.
