This itself is a paradox because destroying yourself is dumb so why would intelligent life do that?

Who’s That Pokémon?
I missed most of the ones that require watching lots of movies/TV.
I got 12/15. That guitar auction questioned surprised me as im into celebrities. Eric Clapton is supposed to be pretty right wing and has similar views to myself, so auctioning guitars for charity doesn’t sound like him.
Never saw fargo. But it reminds me, I must. Its supposed to be the coens best.

With an SD of about 4.4, a current mean of 10.2 and an average reader IQ of 129, someone would need to have an IQ of around 140 to score 15 (Assuming a perfect correlation with G). However my guess is that these particular questions have a pretty low correlation with G, given that knowledge of the answers likely more circumstantial than anything. Take the Larry King, Alice Walker, Broadway musical and Fargo questions, for example.
Not to mention that lifelines were used, as i know what episode this is 😉
The wechsler general knowledge test is extremely g loaded when you adjust for reliability. Of course the wechsler items contain very little pop culture, but pop culture is part of our environment so i don’t see why an intelligent mind wouldn’t learn about that too. You can tell from watching the show which item the lifeline was needed on and which one would have been correctly answered without it.
You don’t need to be into pop culture. I’m a teenager with little pop-culture knowledge, and I got the Alice Walker question, the Fargo question, and the Larry King question (Larry King was on CNN during my lifetime, but I never watch cable television).
As an example of my thought process: I knew Crazyhorse commanded Apaches, which probably makes it rare for white Americans to build statues of him in random towns (even if he is widely admired). I recognized the Lone Ranger as a TV character or archetype, so I think he can’t really be called a folk-hero. Statues of him are probably rare. Johnny Appleseed probably only has statues in his hometown and intowns with lots of apple trees. A statue of Paul Bunyan could be in any town. Finally, between Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed, one of them is famously big. Paul Bunyan’s footprints supposedly were so big they are now lakes. It makes sense to have a big statue of a big man.
A huge mystery is why general knowledge is so g loaded when all it superficially seems to test is long-term memory & cultural exposure. However your comment reminds us how much reasoning is involved in general knowledge.

I’m not American and was vaguely familiar with these folk heroes however I used a combination of the type of movie, year of release, State it was in and likelihood that any one of those heroes would have a statue of them erected. Got it right! Having said that it may be one of those questions where the more you know the harder it becomes to answer lol
In any case I find that typically multiple choice questions are indeed a good predictor of g. One can use all sorts of tricks to answer correctly with limited to no knowledge of the subject matter. Of course there are those instances where you are completely clueless about any one of the choices or topic at which point it’s simply a stab in the dark. I find that I don’t do nearly as well when I ‘m not given multiple choices.
Another example: the Southern Cross is the name of a christian newspaper. I didn’t know why it was called that. After seeing the question, I figured that the idea of Christ as a guiding light could have influenced the title of the newspaper. It also seemed like a constellation is a good name for a newspaper (a few after-the-fact searches showed there are papers named for guiding stars).
I think the multiple choice format does help a lot. It lets you draw on as many associations as possible. If you have to make a guess, you can pull on all those associations. Anything that increases your odds will help you on the test.
I also got question 9, but not because I knew Sorrel was a plant. I thought it sounded like a bird. I can’t know for sure if it’s just dumb luck or if I got the hunch because I was reading about edible plants a few months ago.
If someone is able to consistently have better hunches than other people, that sure would be a useful skill.

How long (and from what age) does one have to be resident to qualify for the same standard as people they are foreign to, in culture tests?
There’s no known answer to that question. The psychologist just uses their best judgement. If an immigrant shows a large culture reduced tests > culture tests IQ gap, then the latter are suspected to be biased against him, though even native-borns might do worse on culture tests if they lack long-term memory.

1) someone RuralRuski who lives in Russia, never did anything formal for his English, except some classes at his school long ago etc. He travels, has been to the uk, the us etc – 28 countries so far,reads news in English,, nothing more than that.
2) someone XY, his friend, they were together at a Medical University , but later XY started his career as a researcher abroad. Up to now he has spent 10 + years at major foreign Universities (including UCLA and U of T). 90% of his articles were written in English. PhD, speaks some Japanese (3 years in Tokyo). All his kids (3 so far) were born in North America. Last time RuralRuski saw him in 2017 in LA and came to conclusion that their (XY, his wife, the kids) home language is drifting towards English.

One of my favourite board games is Trivial Pursuit. I normally do very well in it even if its not my culture. General knowledge is great for someone who makes loose associations….
General knowledge tests aren’t great in that the older you are the more time youve had to soak up trivia. Some items might have been prominent news stories in your newspaper on your commute.
Professional IQ tests are normed for age. But if you compared everyone on the same norms, people over 45 score only about 5 IQ points higher than young adults, but general knowledge declines after 70 and especially after 85 (even excluding diagnosed dementia from the sample).
TV shows are different from region to region.
I went north 200 miles when I was 10 years old and the had Megaman and the Hulk cartoons on the tv. They did not have these shows where I lived 200 miles south.
In the 80’s there were about 180 cartoon shows. It takes 3 hours to watch the openings of all 180 cartoons. You can find 3 videos on youtube with all the openings.
In Toys-R-Us in 1999, there were hundreds of games I did not play at 11 years old. Many of which were popular games. I was exposed to a limited selection of games growing up, I could not play them all.
I was exposed to a limited selection of Anime shows. My family did not have money to travel and buy consumer goods like foreign media and rent them from the video store.

You can’t base general knowledge IQ on culture knowledge because you cannot measure it. The amount of culture is so huge that sampling does not work.
If you got a 40 year old and a 20 year old of the same IQ to do these tests. In 100 cases, more than 50% of the 40 year olds would do better. Sth like 70/100 maybe. Its not culture thats the problem, but age too.

Future estimates of the dollar value of the reserves done in that time could have been higher. As for the level of sophistication involved in the planning, i know their national IQ average is 84, but surely they could be some people in the country with enough IQ to plan those missions.

Every intelligence agency worth its salt may have known that bin Laden could be planning something. I think even the fbi and bush knew about this. But the time and place could have been hard to determine as terror organizations usually determine these at the last moment, in order to prevent intelligence agencies from preventing them and/or the information about them leaking out.

So, on the vocabulary test ( the link again https://www.myvocab.info/en-en ) XY got 13 500 English words, and RuralRuski scored 6700. While an average number for an adult native of a similar age ( the both in their 40s) is slightly above 18000. ( please note that the test counts not single words , but so-called world families , see “how it works” on the site for details )
We see very a serious deficit of known words even in the case of XY. For understanding the results however we should be careful and take into consideration the fact that self-reported average score on Verbal section of SAT from participants on a very similar test were at 95 percentile, and would be higher if we took the general population . Very educated or smart ppl are interested into stuff like that, not a random population.

The both were tested on Information subtest of WAIS IV, US edition , The subtest was administrated in English. The subtest is surprisingly culture-free, beyond all expectations. It was a great joy to see such masterpiece/, It demonstrates how much care we need when we call some test “a culture one”. The results on the Information did not reflect the time spent in North America anymore or a level of English and were closer to the participants’ general IQ. Of course, that observed ‘freedom from culture’ wasn’t absolute, and the guys needed some credit to their scores, but since its still unknown how many points must be added, the scores were taken and analysed as they were.

I don’t like this test. Did it first time and received a 121 on the Verbal test the first time and a 114 the second time. The other two tests were below average. Although I’m probably complaining because of my dissatisfaction with my score
