Below is incredibly rare data of the total number of people in 1984 who scored high on the combined SAT.
We see that of the 3,521,000 Americans born in 1967, roughly 964,739 would grow up to take the SAT at age 17 in 1984. And of those who did, only 20,443 scored 1330+. If one assumes as the great Ron Hoeflin does, that virtually all the top SAT talent took the SAT in 1984 (and whatever shortfall was madeup for by foreign students), then those 20,443 were not just the best of the 964,739 who actually took the SAT, but the best of all 3,521,000 Americans their age. This equates to the one in 172 level or IQ 138+ (U.S. norms).
Meanwhile, only five of the 3,521,000 U.S. babies born in 1967 would grow up to score 1590+ on the SAT, so 1590+ is one in 704,200 level, or IQ 170+.
Meanwhile a national norm study found that if all Americans 17-year-olds took the SAT in the mid 1980s, not just the college bound elite, the average score would have been 787, so 787 implies an IQ of 100.
Armed with these three data points:
1590+ = IQ 170+
1330 = IQ 138
787 = IQ 100
Sadly, because the line is not linear, but rather positively accelerated (because of ceiling bumping on the SAT) no simple equation could be created, so I made a polynominal equating 1984 combined SAT to IQ (not sure how accurate this is since I only used 3 data points):
IQ = 114.13423524934914 – 0.06999703795283904(SAT) + 0.00006612121953074045(SAT)2
it’s rare how?
It’s very rare to get data on how many people scored super high on the COMBINED SAT (verbal + math)
because hoeflin made it up?
[redacted by pp, aug 26, 2017]
0 at 1590 and 5 out of 1m at 1600 is not ceiling bumping [redacted by pp, aug 26, 2017]
There was ceiling bumping on the math section which made combined scores of 1590+ obscenely rare.
you didn’t post that. how do you know.
Because I know 700+ scores on the math were more common than 700+ scores on the verbal on the old SAT

what study was that? the one you made up?
This study:
the average score by religious affiliation at one time had jews in 2d place. but their average score was only 1162. unitarians beat them with 1200 something, and quakers (like nixon) at 1150 something.
now if quakers and jews are smarter for genetic reasons this might be evidence of the theory that the jews who stuck with judaism were smarter than those who left. the US has only about 200k quakers. it used to have lots more. but this effect has been only in the last 200 years for the quakers.
so it appears the SAT taking population is more elite than the average jew? or does every jew take the SAT? vs only an elite of other groups?
Maybe you’re mixing the old SAT with the new SAT. If Jews scored 1162 before 1995, that’s insanely high.
no it isn’t. the average score was 1000.
No the average score for SAT takers was set at 1000 in 1941, but over the decades as the SAT population became less and less elite, it drifted downward which is why they had to re-center it in 1995
more on the jewish % of whites who score 750-800.
i wonder if sailer’s data is right.
at my high school i knew 5 people, including me, who scored 750 or higher. all of them were white gentiles. and i assume there were more i didn’t know.
in 1995 everyone’s score went up by 100 points. but i think that was mostly in the verbal section. maybe entirely.
and my hs was NOT elite. but it may have had higher scores than most hss in the state. the few jews in my hs were not very smart. it could be that it’s only dumb jewish parents who send their kids to public schools though.
the guy who scored highest may have been a quaker. his mother wore a head covering. his father also dressed funny. you might think he was jewish, but he attended a “christian” college when he could have gone to a much more selective college and his father was a professor at the nearby quaker college.
I think that my scores on the New Mexico tests,
only work within New Mexico.
My New Mexico score of 1471 would
place me above 99.782 percent of students in New Mexico.
Which is an IQ of 142.
But since New Mexico is Ranked 48th in the country that means New Mexican Students are in the 6th percentile (IQ 77).
77 is the average adjusted SAT-IQ score of NM by that measure.
The diviation becomes 11.55
So 42/15 = 2.8 and 11.55(2.8) + 77 = 109.34
109 = 72 percentil in IQ.
SAT-IQ of 109 would be Rank 14th by state, which is Rhode Island.
My 1471 New Mexico test scores would be adjusted to 1010 on the SAT.
gibberish^^^
I suspect you took some scholastic test that was normed on ALL teenagers, not just the college bound elite, thus your score, while very impressive, was not quite as impressive as it would have been on the SAT
If it was scholastic test normed on all teenagers then I was wrong that it was only relevant in New Mexico. If it was only relevant in New Mexico then because NM is ranked 48th in the country. If the test was only in NM then because of NM low rank (48th) my score would be lower in comparison to higher ranked state.
High scores in a low ranked state would be average scores in a high ranked state.
Comparing performance within and between states.
I wonder what scholastic test I took.
I am sure IQ statistics could be made on it.
I remember that Judith Resnik, astronaut who
died in Challenger explosion, scored 1600 in 1966. It is on her wiki page and documented on nasa material. She was the only girl that year.
The only girl in the country to score 1600? I would love to know ho many people scored 1600 in 1966.
Yes, in 1966, she was the only one. Would be interesting to know if SAT had the same scale in 1966 than in 1984. I thought the story was making the test easier, not more difficult That should be easy to find. More difficult would be knowing this astronaut IQ, If Robespierre had access to that thx to his Nasa connection 🙂
I believe all SAT scores from 1941 to before april 1995 were normed on a scale where the average SAT taker in 1941 would have scored 500 on verbal and 500 on math, with an SD of 100 on both sections.
Then she was quite a clever girl. It’s so sad. In 2013 I heard a Beyonce song called XO wich include a challenger sample. Then I googled all crew members and learned about this woman perfect SAT before recentering. She was 100% jewish by the way :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Resnik
Apparently the U.S. education system was really good in the 1960s, since an astonishing 16 people scored perfect on the SAT in 1966, despite a smaller population than in 1984:
Judith was one of sixteen people who got a perfect SAT test score, the only woman among fifteen other men.
It seems as the means has been going down until the recentering 1995. 1039 in 1972 and 1001 in 1984. If the sd was the same, the shape of the top 5 spots (the 100 peole) is much less significant the further you go from 1995. So 16 top scorers or 5 doesn’t tells you much I guess about education. What’s interesting is that this astronaut had probably an IQ above 145.
Another interesting fact I had loved to discover is that the first woman in space was a (closeted) lesbian : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Ride. When you consider her CV, it’s obvious her IQ was also extremely high (her conversion as a professor of physics at San Diego.

No test is done to identify people at more than 4sd … Maybe firms will do that if they find a way to replicate the genes. However, my intuitition is that geniuses are very good for the group interest and that much for their personal genetic interest in the same ways as heroes or saint. So maybe people wont be that much interested in a capitalist society to buy thoses genes, even if it were possible.
I don’t know about my IQ, but I would’nt buy me genes if I were someone else 🙂
“and not that much”
From 7:15 on in the video below: “A Bright student is in the Top academic Groups in school, a Gifted student is beyond the Top Groups”.
Old but gold, and you forget the creative students.
