i should’ve pointed out if anyone reads these comments that not only is P(G, E) not equal to G + E, but E is itself a function of time and G. G is fixed at conception whereas E changes and can be changed by the individual himself.
so P(G, E(G, E0, t)) is the right way of thinking about it. E0 is the intital environment, t is time of course.

Hmm. I’ve had my share of statistics classes (long ago), but not in this area, so I cry uncle, though it’s annoying because it can be done. (Sorry, I’ve grown lazy in my middle age. Also, in my field, I only need to use ridiculously easy statistics, so the skills have grown quite rusty.) Regardless, could you recommend a book or two for a reasonably knowledgeable beginner in genetics. I’ve been meaning to do that for a while, so it’d be nice to have someone point me in the right direction.

I would start by making sure you get clear on certain statistical concepts (assuming you’re not) such as “standard deviation”, correlation, “percentage of variation” and standardized linear regression.
Once you’ve looked up and understand all that, I would just do a google search on heritability and how its calculated from twin studies.
I would also read Jensen’s book “The g Factor”; he has a chapter on heritability. I haven’t read the entire chapter, but Jensen’s scholarship is generally outstanding, interesting and lucid.
Reading that book alone is far better than a university education.

without exception psychologists do not understand it, and so-called “behavior genetics” has absolutely nothing to do with genetics. it’s a subfield of psychology.

here’s my edit to the wikipedia article on hereditatrianism. it’s stood for months. it will stand until pp and his ilk delete it, as they are exactly what they accuse their imagined opressors of being, namely stalinists who simply won’t allow any disagreement with their pseudo-science.
The dominant view outside psychology among biologists and geneticists is that both of these are gross oversimplifications and that the behavioral/psychological phenotype for human beings is determined by a function of genes and environment which cannot be decomposed into a sum of functions of the two independently. And this especially because human behavior is uniquely plastic compared to that of other animals. The commonly cited heritability, h2, is meaningful only in the context of the independent effects model. This model may be a good approximation to the real function given that the range of genomes and the range of environments is sufficiently narrow, e.g., white upper middle class Americans living in Chicago. Otherwise it is both meaningless and misleading to the extent it is supposed to have any meaning at all.
